Pay Range
$172,140 - $221,064 Annually for the SEL.3 level
$206,490 - $265,188 Annually for the SEL.4 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have an opening for a Group Leader for the Analytics for Advanced Manufacturing Group within the Micro and Nano Technology Section (MNTS). You will provide leadership for R&D activities in areas such as data science, machine learning, and digital twins in the broad technical space encompassed by Advanced Manufacturing and/or materials. You will have a meaningful role in developing successful careers, building a positive working environment, and developing an extraordinary staff to meet program needs. In addition to the Group Leader role, you will be expected to maintain a technical programmatic assignment. This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering Principal Associate Directorate.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this role, you will

  • Provide technical and administrative leadership and direction to group members, write performance appraisals, and participate in the MED division ranking and salary management processes.
  • Set specific technical strategy and direction for the team and identify staffing needs necessary to support Laboratory programs.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering Center Leaders and Section Leaders to identify and lead complex technical work assignments for the group members, defining work objectives, tracking project milestones, and obtaining ongoing performance feedback.
  • Advise and evaluate staff on the execution of technical work via formal reviews; provide technical updates and presentations to senior leadership, customers, and external sponsors.
  • Identify networking opportunities, technical and non-technical growth areas, training and mentoring needs, and opportunities for group personnel, facilitating periodic career development discussions.
  • Monitor and influence the work environment to develop employee morale and well-being; recruit, hire, and retain outstanding technical staff.
  • Provide support to the section leader to address organizational needs.
  • Guide the completion of projects and contribute to the development of organizational goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.4 Level

  • Responsible for higher-level goal setting, strategic planning efforts toward long range goals and identifying new opportunities, working with Division Leader and Section Leader.
  • Develop solutions to highly unusual, highly complex, and/or sensitive issues/problems where the solution path is not known ahead of time.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science Engineering, Computer Engineering, Manufacturing, Engineering or related field or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
  • Advanced knowledge and significant experience in one or more of the following technical areas: artificial intelligence, big-data analytics, computer vision, computing infrastructure, machine learning, predictive modeling, statistical inference, uncertainty quantification, or related fields.
  • Advanced domain knowledge in materials science data sets and/or manufacturing processes and data streams.
  • Significant experience collaborating with technical business partners to identify and lead complex, technical projects including workforce planning, tracking milestones, and providing performance feedback to involved team members.
  • Significant experience giving technical presentations and participating in reviews, identifying technical needs, developing practical approaches, and delivering working solutions for program customers.
  • Experience leading and managing a team of technical staff, including training, coaching, team building, and career and performance management.
  • Advanced communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, and advise senior management and external sponsors.

Additional qualifications at the SEL.4 Level

  • Extensive experience in project planning and highly complex technical leadership.
  • Extensive experience developing and implementing creative solutions to a diverse range of highly complex problems.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to present, explain, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Masters or PhD in Materials Science Engineering, Computer Engineering, Manufacturing, Engineering or related field
  • Experience with LLNL and Engineering administrative policies, procedures, and design safety practices and standards.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
