Job description

We are seeking a Chemist or Materials scientist to join the Research and development team based at our Components factory in Wrexham, UK. The successful candidate will design, test and support a diverse range of resin encapsulation materials and polymer-based components used in low and medium voltage cable accessories.
The position will focus on new product development with additional support of Prysmian’s proprietary resin and other materials. Utilizing the successful candidates chemistry/polymer science knowledge and skills the successful candidate will lead the development of the next generation of materials used to insulate cable jointing systems. However, as part of a multi-disciplinary team the position will provide you with a broad exposure and appreciation of cable accessory design, materials and testing and the potential to collaborate with internationally recognized external bodies including academia.
Typical tasks include:
  • Lead and support projects to evaluate new and / or alternative materials with the aim of enhancing technical performance of existing resin formulations.
  • Lead the multidisciplinary team to develop the next generation of resin materials suitable for use in Prysmian’s cable accessory systems
  • Support and provide technical assistance including material specification and performance with projects requiring polymers and plastics in new and ongoing projects.
  • To build a knowledge of the Prysmian cold pour resin technologies to support the current manufacturing processes.
  • Undertake projects for the development or adaptation of resin formulations for new applications.
  • Prepare and support test programmes associated with new and existing products including benchmarking of Prysmian and competitor.
  • Involvement with in-house type approval testing of resin filled cable joints.
  • Work with quality and Health and Safety in the creation and maintenance of safety datasheets and other literature.
  • Liaise with Purchasing and suppliers on the specification and approval of new materials.
  • Support customers and commercial teams with the specification of products and technical support.
Who We Are Looking For
  • An experienced chemist with a minimum degree in chemistry, polymer science or other related subject plus a suitable level of experience in research or manufacturing. A higher master’s or PhD would be advantageous.
  • Experience in Resins or polymer manufacturing would be beneficial but not essential.
  • Good practical skills within a laboratory environment
  • Strong analytical skills to assimilate and review technical data.

NB. Due to the location of the factory, it would be advantageous to have a full UK driving licence or own transport.
