Are you torn between starting your career in Engineering or going to university? Would you like to start both at the same time? Join us as a Graduate Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Apprentice and you can qualify as an Engineering Graduate and get experience at the same time!
About the Role
So, what’ll you be doing? You’ll start your four-year Graduate Apprenticeship program with us in August 2024. From your first day you’ll be an active team member within our engineering project team. There’s no such thing as a typical day as an apprentice and you'll be involved in developing engineering specifications, planning and delivering mechanical engineering projects and offering support to our operations and maintenance teams. You’ll be well supported from every employee within the company as you grow into your new career.
Ultimately, you’ll be learning to be responsible and accountable for the equipment and systems that form our Hydro Power Scheme. But that’s not all, you’ll also be learning to solve problems safely, logically, quickly, and confidently. Further training and development are a key part of your career journey at Drax as well, and this comes in many forms such as on the job training, working at different sites, or further qualifications.
You’ll be joining a team of experienced and trainee engineers. So, you’ll get all the knowledge of our highly skilled long serving engineers, alongside all the advice, friendship, and support of your apprentice colleagues. Through a structured training plan, we’ll enable you to achieve both career progression and your goal of achieving a professional recognised engineer status in the future.
What we’re looking for …
You’ll need (or be predicted to achieve a minimum of 4 SQA Highers at BBBC including Maths and English at a C and at least one science subject (you’ll need to prove these before you start so make sure you keep your certificates handy).
Our training provider accepts selected Foundation Apprenticeships, in combination with SQA Highers, for entry to the degree programme. Your Foundation Apprenticeship will take the place of one SQA Higher qualification for our standard entry requirements and will be treated as equivalent to a B grade at Higher.
We can also support non-standard entry, so if you have prior work experience and professional qualifications there is a possibility to be considered through the university’s flexible entry system let us know this in your application if this applied to you.
As well as getting the right grades, we’ll also be looking for candidates who seek a future career in engineering and see this as an opportunity to study whilst getting hands on experience in the real world of work. You’ll be a good communicator who can work as part of a team, and you’ll have excellent listening skills with energy, drive, and initiative.
