Primary Purpose of the Role:
- To carry out general engineering tasks as required by the business.
- With the support of other members of the team, carry out more specialised mechanical design tasks associated with design for the subsea environment.
- Actively make steps to learn from other members of the Portfolio.
- Share their knowledge and experience with other members of the team.
Principal Relationships:
- Reporting to the Portfolio Hardware Engineering Manager (Templecombe)
- Communication within the team to share experience both ways to learn from others and develop experience.
- To communicate progress and issues with the Hardware Engineering Manager / Project Manager for the allocated tasks. Keeping Hardware Engineering Manager informed of challenges, successes and issues.
Key Responsibilities and Tasks:
The role may include, but not be limited to the following activities:
- To develop and agree a development plan with the Harware Engineering Manager and then take responsibility for following the development plan and requesting assistance as needed.
- To carry out mechanical design activities in a team environment with other engineers.
- Work collaboratively with production and procurement to produce cost effective, easy to manufacture design solutions.
- Provide support to the preparation of detailed estimates and bids.
- Provide support to production as required.
- Trials and integration support as required.
Key performance Indicators against Responsibilities and Tasks (professional only):
- Monitor compliance of designs against target costs and lead-time.
- The Engineer is expected to monitor their performance against agreed commitments to Time, Cost and Quality.
- Performance measured against individual objectives in accordance with the company appraisal system.
Skills
Essential
- Fundamental understanding of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering principals.
- General understanding of Engineering Development lifecycles.
- Good interpersonal skills
- Proactive “can-do” mentality
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Must have Microsoft Office suite experience
- The individual will be expected to demonstrate a level of autonomy.
- A logical approach to problem solving is required.
Desirable
- Thermal management (use of CFD tools useful but not essential)
- Carry out basic static stress and FEA analysis using CREO Simulate.
Experience:
Essential
- Strong demonstrated experience of Mechanical Design Roles including at least a subset of the following:
- Packaging of electronics and associated cabling.
- Designing for platform installation. Ship / submarine.
- Designing of assembly and mould tooling.
- Designing of lifting equipment.
- Producing key point manufacturing drawings in support of machine from model.
- Producing detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings.
- Providing support to the preparation of design requirements.
- Proficient in the use of 3D CAD system.
Desirable
- Proficient in the use of CREO & PDMLink.
- The key areas of design undertaken for which previous experience would be beneficial will include: -
- The design of sonar assemblies and equipment for the sub-sea environment.
- The design deployment systems
- Design processes involving moulding of polyurethane, epoxy and other resins.
- Design of composite structures and sonar domes.
- Design / specification of sub-sea cable assemblies.
- Thermal management (use of CFD tools useful but not essential)
- Carry out basic static stress and FEA analysis using CREO Simulate
Qualifications:

- HNC / HND / Degree
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer or equivalent
