Job description

Programme title: Mechanical Engineering with Manufacturing Degree Apprenticeship
Level: 6
Salary: £22,862
Location: Bristol
Application closing date: March 2024
Programme start date: September 2024

Earn a good salary whilst gaining a degree and extensive real-world experience on our 6-year Mechanical Engineering with Manufacturing Degree Apprenticeship. Work alongside experienced engineers on a range of interesting projects including Submarines and Surface Ships and help us to continue to develop at pace to meet our customers' needs.
About the programme
In your first year you will work in our onsite apprentice training workshop where you will gain Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) Units (Foundation Workshop Training) and attend University Centre Weston (UCW) to learn core modules.
In years 2 to 4, you'll complete a number of placements across the business, with a particular focus on our production environment, where you will learn how we produce the high-quality complex assemblies for which Babcock Mission Systems is renowned. During this time, you will attend university on a part-time basis to complete your BEng degree.
Through the placements in the first 4 years, you should experience almost all the design cycle, and will develop the associated engineering skills. In year 5 and 6 you will be working in your substantive role in an area of the business you want to specialise in.
This programme gives you a broad exposure to our business, including experience in analysis, design, business winning and project management. There are also opportunities to undertake off-site placements at some of our other business units - something which we strongly encourage and support.
At the end of the programme you will be at Engineer grade, identical to your peers who have attended university, completed our graduate programme and are working to become our future Lead Engineers and Design Managers within the business.
Your education/training
Aside from gaining diverse work experience, across this 6-year programme, you will gain Performing Engineering Operations Units (Foundation Workshop Training) and a Mechanical Engineering with Manufacturing Degree (BEng).
Your technical training will be supplemented with in-house training courses and soft skill training to help you develop your personal and team working skills.
What you'll need
• A minimum of 5 GCSEs, all at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) including Maths, English and a Science.
• 3 A Levels in Maths, Physics plus a third subject, at grade B or above or equivalent qualifications.
• You'll need to have strong communication skills, the ability to work well in a team, be self-motivated and have a passion for Engineering and Technology.
• Many of our early careers roles are subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions which mean that your place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency you hold or have held may impact which roles you are eligible for. Further details are available at United Kingdom Security Vetting: clearance levels - GOV.UK ( www.gov.uk ) . For our early careers roles, you must be able to achieve BPSS and many of them require you to be eligible for Security Clearance.
What you'll get
We will provide you with a supportive and engaging environment where you can grow your career.
In addition, you'll benefit from:
• Fully funded qualification
• Personal development training and opportunities
• Minimum 28 days holiday allowance including bank holidays
• Competitive pension scheme
• Employee share scheme
• Flexible benefits including cycle to work scheme and employee shopping savings portal
You'll also have the chance to get involved in our STEM outreach activities and volunteering opportunities, which our apprentices find incredibly rewarding.

Plus, when you join us, you'll be automatically enrolled onto our Apprentice Development Programme.
