Job description
The role would suit a hardworking, enthusiastic and friendly person who can remain calm and pleasant at all times. You must also be able to use your initiative and work unsupervised.
The successful candidate will be required to provide a comprehensive and efficient medical secretarial service within the Elective Orthopaedics Department.
The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the timely delivery of clinical correspondence and will be required to be the first point of contact for patients and consultants. It is therefore essential that you are a good communicator with excellent interpersonal skills.
Previous experience in a customer care environment and good IT, typing and keyboard skills are essential. Duties will also include diary management, answering the telephone and dealing with queries from a number of sources in a calm and pleasant manner. Experience in minute taking and with the various hospital systems such as HISS ,DIT3, Medirota and Accurx would be advantageous.

• As directed by the Senior Medical Administrator or consultants, update and maintain the consultant job planning system to ensure an accurate reflection of the consultant’s job plan.
• Provide a first point of contact for all levels of staff, patients and their relatives with the clinician.
• This will include advice and support to patients and their carers in relation to their appointments, treatment and diagnosis ensuring that at all times confidentiality and data protection are not breached.
• To provide a courteous and professional service at all times with respect to communication to patients, colleagues and service users.
• Responsible for the initial handling of complaints or other information requests coming in to the clinical office.
• Ensure results/reports are chased in a timely manner and brought to the Consultant’s / Medical Teams attention. Ensure results are followed up so patients are given follow up appointments/discharged as appropriate.
• To work on own initiative to answer queries regarding patient’s results (for example, results from MRI’s and ensure these are picked up from the relevant department on a regular basis).
• To have an understanding of the CBU’s systems and processes to enable queries to be resolved effectively.
• Any other duties as may be required by the Consultants, Medical Teams, Senior Medical Administrator /Team Leader.

• To support the team in the ongoing management of 18 week pathways and cancer targets
• Provide assistance and support to clinicians and their teams in researching and preparing academic or other papers for publication or presentation.
• Ensure that all Consultants and their teams annual leave and study leave is communicated to the relevant areas and that where appropriate arrangements are made for either cover or reduction of clinics.
• To take responsibility for ensuring that consultant leave and other absences are communicated to the relevant person/department including outpatients, day case and inpatient waiting list offices.
• To coordinate the consultant theatre diary ensuring that all dropped theatre lists are communicated to day case and inpatient waiting list offices and service manager. To include where appropriate the preparation and distribution and updating of the operation lists and where required co-ordinate with other services or teams e,g. imaging.
