Pay Range
$159,330 - $204,636 Annually
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have an opening for a Research Scientist with experience in microbiology and molecular diagnostics. The candidate will be an integral member of BBTD, and will support ongoing bio-surveillance and bioremediation work that directly impacts programs within the Department of Energy. Candidates should have an interest in learning new skills and techniques and applying them to solve real-world scientific problems that inform the safe use of these technologies for both government and commercial applications. The position is in the Biosecurity, Assessments, and Materials Group of the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.
In this role you will:

  • Develop diagnostic assays for emerging pathogen research
  • Identify and characterize molecular signatures of pathogens in multi-omics data to inform bio-surveillance efforts
  • Characterize microbial interactions with polymer materials through imaging and functional testing
  • Provide strategic guidance on biology-related research opportunities
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings.
  • Evaluate large data sets to refine, inform, and design subsequent experiments
  • Organize, analyze, and present data from research at seminars, technical meetings, and national and international conferences.
  • Maintain a safe laboratory environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Microbiology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Genomics, Bioengineering, Virology, or a related field.
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Significant experience with molecular diagnostics, from assay design to production and manufacturing of diagnostic tests
  • Significant experience with technical and grant writing
  • Advanced written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills necessary to deliver presentations, prepare written reports and to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff.
  • Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
  • Advanced knowledge of developing independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature

Qualifications we desire:

  • Familiarity working with and analyzing large, multi-omics datasets.
  • Experience with nanoencapsulation, biomaterials, and/or polymer science.
  • Experience working in a Biosafety Level 2 laboratory.

This is a Flexible Term appointment, which is for a definite period not to exceed six years. If final candidate is a Career Indefinite employee, Career Indefinite status may be maintained (should funding allow).

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
