Modern Apprenticeship – Engineering Maintenance (Multi-Skilled)

Duration: 4 years fixed term

Location: Shields

Salary: Starting salary: £19,901 per annum

  • Upon completion of Year 1 - salary increase £21,645 per annum
  • Upon completion of Year 2 - salary increase £22,616 per annum
  • Upon completion of Year 3 - salary increase £24,338 per annum

The Opportunity

ScotRail have 4 maintenance depots throughout Scotland that are responsible for the maintenance and repair of more than 600 vehicles, providing critical support to the ongoing performance of Scotland’s Railway.

As an apprentice engineer your day-to-day activities will be learning about and supporting the depot for the maintenance and repair of ScotRail vehicles. This will involve finding and repairing faults, changing brakes and wheels and how to repair lights, seats, and heating systems. You will also test mechanical and electrical systems, inspect body work and under-carriages for wear and tear or damage and perform regular checks on systems like brakes and couplings. As part of your role, you will be learning to service and repair our trains while assisting the engineering team as they maintain ScotRail’s fleet of trains.

The Person

To follow health and safety requirements and regulations and funding criteria, this apprenticeship is open to people aged 17 to 24 and people up to age 29 who identify as having a disability or who are care experienced.

As a minimum, applicants should have achieved qualifications at SCQF Level 5 (or above) in Maths, English and a STEM subject, preferably Physics/Chemistry. Other relevant experience such as a Foundation Apprenticeship in Engineering, National Qualification in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent experience will also be considered if the above qualifications have not been achieved. You will be required to travel to and from college. You will be required to follow a shift pattern that will include nightshift on completion of your first year at college.

Candidates should have:

An interest in working in engineering.
A willingness to learn.
A willingness to complete a 4-year apprenticeship.
A willingness to attend regular reviews to discuss your progress and development.
A willingness to attend internal training (and external training if required) and taking responsibility, with support, to collect the evidence required for your SVQ Portfolio.

What can you expect from your apprenticeship?

You will progress through a Modern Apprenticeship in Engineering Maintenance (multi-skilled) over a 4-year programme. Your time will be divided between attending college and gaining real life workplace experience with ScotRail.

As well as gaining a broad range of technical and professional knowledge and experience, you will also gain academic and vocational qualifications such as:

  • Performing Engineering Operations (PEO2)
  • SVQ Level 3
  • Relevant NC qualification
  • You also may have the opportunity to progress onto an HNC.

The selection process:

  • Submit your application – be sure to spend enough time on it, taking your time to explain why you would like to be an Engineering Modern Apprentice. Research the role before applying and check your application for any errors before you submit it as well.
  • If you are shortlisted, we will invite you to undertake assessment.
  • If successful, the next stage will be an interview with the hiring manager.
  • The final stage for successful candidates will be a safety critical medical including drug and alcohol screening and Disclosure Scotland. You’ll then be asked to provide at least 2 satisfactory references. At this point you’ll be welcomed on board.
