Honeycomb Jobs is delighted to be working with a Public Sector client, to recruit a Museum Assistant for a temporary role based in Ballymena.

The Client – The Public Sector organisation is situated in the Ballymena catchment area.

The Role: Credible role reporting to a Heritage Officer within Development directorate while assisting in the day to day operation and administration of a museum in Ballymena, and its collections, to meet customer, visitor and audience needs.

Duties will include but will not be limited to:

  • Carry out duties in respect of general assistance at the museum, including administrative support functions such as word processing, filing, coding of invoices, drafting letters, handling emails/telephone calls, enquiries and requests, taking appropriate actions as required.
  • Deal with queries from public, schools and community groups in respect of areas of service delivery.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of workshops, talks, tours and educational visits to the museum, including digital engagement. When required assist with the delivery of workshops and tours off-site as part of the museums’ outreach programme.
  • Support the Museum Collections Officer with researching and documenting the museum and civic collections, including the process of creating entry records and cataloguing, and maintaining and developing documentation and computerised information files relevant to the collection and local history.
  • Assist with the delivery of a conservation plan for museum artefacts as implemented by the Museum Collections Officer, including basic cleaning and preventive conservation of artefacts. Draw the Museum Collections Officer’s attention to any problems requiring external conservation advice or work by a professional conservator, and facilitate access by professional conservators working onsite to objects in the collection and provide supporting collection documentation on request.
  • Assist with marking and labelling of objects in the museum’s care as per the documentation plan implemented by the Museum Collections Officer.
  • Monitor and control environmental conditions for storage and display areas and report matters of concern to the Heritage Development Officer, including maintaining good housekeeping and a pest maintenance programme in Museum collection stores, both on and off site.
  • Maintain incoming and outgoing loans documentation for exhibition purposes.
  • Assist the museum team in searches and documentation relating to rights management and copyright issues.
  • Assist with the organisation of training sessions, meetings, projects and conferences relating to the delivery of heritage and museum projects.
  • Attend Museum project meetings and functions in an administrative capacity, to record minutes and distribute to all attendees following meetings.
  • Liaise with the Visitor Experience & Audience Development Manager, and the Communications team, on the promotion of the museum and its programme of events.

The Person

As the successful candidate you will have the following background and experience:

Essential:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs to include English Language and Maths (grade C or above) or equivalent qualifications to demonstrate literacy and numeracy

AND

  • One year’s experience assisting in a museum or heritage environment, including experience of delivering tours or workshops.

OR

  • Alternatively consideration may be given to candidates who do not possess the required educational qualifications but who can demonstrate two years’ experience assisting in a museum or heritage environment, including experience of delivering tours or workshops.
