Job description

Working closely with the National Sustainability Manager, you'll play a vital role in making sure everything runs smoothly.

National Sustainability is part of our core values, so you'll be on the front line, celebrating best practice with industry bodies, NGO's, retailers and suppliers. You will be considered a specialist in your given field and will be immersed in a wide variety of different tasks involving putting proposals together, training new staff members and liaising with stakeholders.

An opportunity has arisen to join the highly motivated Sustainability Team as a Sustainability (Energy & Environment) Assistant. This is a permanent role, reporting into the Sustainability (Energy & Environment) Manager and is key to delivering net zero for Aldi’s operations.

As part of Aldi’s Sustainability Team, you will be supporting with the delivery of our Global Sustainability Strategy. You will be responsible for planning, leading, and implementing Sustainability projects across Aldi UK and Ireland relating to operational energy, carbon and water. Focus areas of this role include water management, utilities procurement, renewables (i.e., solar) and energy and carbon reporting. Experience in these areas is not essential but would be desirable.


The successful candidate will be responsible for managing several carbon, energy and water related operational projects to support Aldi in reducing our environmental impact. You will require a high level of organisation, planning and communication skills to positively influence change across a broad range of stakeholders.

Your New Role

  • Supporting the Sustainability (Energy & Environment Manager) with the delivery of projects to reduce Aldi’s operational environmental impact.
  • Leading projects to deliver energy, carbon, and water reduction across the business.
  • Managing the submission of Aldi’s annual Company Carbon Footprint (CCF), Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) and Taskforce for Climate-Related Risk Disclosure (TCFD).
  • Manage the relationship with external consultants who support Aldi with energy and water management.
  • Working with external consultants to complete progress reports for energy consumption and carbon emissions.
  • Working with the team to set goals and targets for each project and the team.
  • Researching carbon reduction, energy & water efficiency technologies to provide the business with a commercial advantage, achieve cost saving targets and reduce its environmental impact.
  • Maximizing internal engagement with colleagues across the business to gain buy-in for carbon, energy, and water reduction initiatives.
  • Tailor communication of complex information in a clear way that is relevant for the audience.
  • Positively influence multiple levels of the business to continue to consider sustainability in their decision making.
  • Proactively develop own knowledge of topics, demonstrating initiative and suggesting ways of reducing operational carbon emissions, water and energy use.
  • Monitor competitor activity in the relevant areas of Sustainability.
  • Prepare paperwork (Memos, One-Page Business Cases, Approval Documentation) to communicate the team’s work and projects.
  • Maximise external communication opportunities by working with our Customer Interaction Teams.

About You

  • GCSE or equivalent passed in English and Maths.
  • Experience delivering impactful Sustainability projects in a multisite organisation, preferably in the areas of carbon, energy or water.
  • Able to positively influence stakeholders to gain buy-in for Sustainability initiatives.
  • Experience developing and implementing business cases.
  • Autonomous and able to deliver efficient project management.
  • Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to present to internal and external audiences in a simple and meaningful way.
  • Well-developed written communication skills with the ability to deliver concise and clear briefing papers.
  • Exceptional analytical skills and comfortable processing large volumes of data to track emissions and consumption.
  • Detail-orientated and curious.
  • Organised and able to plan ahead and prioritise your own workload and stakeholders’.
  • A team player and able to build strong relationships both internally and externally.
  • Willing to be flexible and able to work to tight deadlines when necessary.
  • Enjoys working as part of a team and supporting colleagues.
  • A champion of Sustainability who will support us to take the topic even further within Aldi.
