Naval Ships Marine Painting Advanced Apprenticeship

Job Title: Advanced Apprentice Naval Ships Fabricator Burner, Glasgow

Location: Glasgow

Salary: Starting from £17,127 with annual progression through the scheme duration.

What you will be doing:

During the Fabricator Burner Apprenticeship, you’ll be trained in the preparation and fabrication of various major assemblies that are used to create our products. You will gain experience using a wide variety of tools and equipment covering marking out, thermal cutting and welding. You will learn to use equipment safely and efficiently to prepare, manufacture and install components to the highest degree of quality. 

Specific activities could include:

When initially beginning your apprenticeship with BAE Systems you are brought into the company to receive training which will allow for you to be able to enter the shipyard, once your initial training at GTG is complete and you have gained any security clearance required you begin your apprenticeship. For the first year you spend the academicals year learning about your trade at Clydebank college where you will learn practical skills and technical skills, practical skills being welding (MMA and MiG/MaG) for the fabrication side of the job, you will also practically learn about the Burning aspect of the job and once your lecturer is happy that you are proficient with the equipment you will be allowed to try the oxy-Fuel (Burning) equipment & Plasma cutting. 

When you complete your academic year at college you will start working within the shipyard, spending your first 6 weeks within the designated training school where you will learn how the equipment works and operates in a practical way and it will allow for you to get used to the equipment, you will also learn how to read and interpret Data and documentation & Shipbuilding fairing techniques. All training will be carried out whilst complying with all Statutory Regulations and procedures. 

What Qualification Will You Get?

  • Performing Engineering Operations SVQ 2 
  • National Certificate in welding & fabrication 
  • (Opportunity of Higher National Certificate in Fabrication, Welding & Inspection)
  • SVQ 3 Marine Structural Steel
