Naval Ships Trialsand Commissioning Engineer Advanced Apprenticeship

Job Title: Advanced Apprentice Naval Ships Trials and Commissioning Engineer, Glasgow

Location: Glasgow

Salary: Starting from £21,353 with annual progression through the scheme duration.

What you will be doing:

As an Engineering Technical Apprentice – Trials and Commissioning, you will be involved in highly skilled work and gain experience within the Trials and Commissioning department.

The department is multi-disciplinary, with a mixture of both mechanical and electrical engineers, and involves working both in the office and on board the vessel – whether in a dry or wet basin, or during sea trials. Trials & Commissioning at Naval Ships consists of sub-teams such as:

HVAC & Hotel: responsible for everything required for people to live on board, such as: heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and reverse osmosis plants to produce fresh drinking water.

Power & Propulsion: responsible for machinery such as gas turbines, diesel generators, and the main propulsion shaft line.

Hull & Deck: responsible for equipment such as the mission bay handling system and anchor windlass.

Fixed Fire-Fighting: responsible for the various systems and equipment involved in fighting fires and floods on board the vessel.

PMS: responsible for the Platform Management System which allows remote control of equipment on board

LV: the low voltage team, responsible for equipment such as the electrical switchboards and all electrical distribution on board.

The role of a Commissioning Engineer includes: Setting Systems and Machinery to Work for the first time, Fault Finding, undertaking Basin Trials and Sea Trials; as well as working closely with Ministry of Defence and Royal Navy personnel to ensure a smooth handover. When operational problems or developments arise investigations are undertaken and solutions are developed, individually or as a member of a team. Commissioning processes and procedures also require continuous modification in response to technical developments and operational requirements.

Trials & Commissioning at Naval Ships consists of multi-discipline teams of highly skilled suitably qualified and experienced engineers (SQEP). This is organised under a Senior Commissioning Manager who is designated as the lead for the successful commissioning and trials phases which include Setting to Work and Commissioning of Ships Systems and Machinery, Fault Finding, Basin Trials and Sea Trials.

Qualification requirements

  • 4 National 5s Grade C or above (or equivalent) – Maths, English, Science or Technical plus three Highers at grade C or above in English, Maths, Science or Technical or equivalent (excluding Application of Maths).
