Job description

We have a vacancy for a dedicated night nurse to join our dynamic, friendly team. The successful candidate will provide excellent in-patient care at our modern small animal clinic.

About Us

We are an independent, RCVS-accredited, progressive practice situated in the heart of the Devon countryside. You will be joining an experienced, compassionate, friendly team that strives to provide exemplary patient care. Our practice boasts a state-of-the-art surgery with excellent small animal facilities.

Located in beautiful mid-Devon near Exeter, our practice offers a 4-day work week, allowing for a great work/life balance. We have purpose-built small animal facilities that are continuously improving, including ongoing work to extend our prep and kennel area. Our practice boasts laparoscopic capabilities, a full range of endoscopes, dental radiography, ultrasound, and upcoming upgrades to our radiography to DR. Additionally, we have an onsite rehabilitation team with underwater treadmill and laser, as well as visiting orthopaedics and ophthalmology services. Construction of equine hospitalisation facilities is currently underway.
Our approachable team is experienced in providing an environment for colleagues to thrive. We take pride in covering our own out-of-hours rota, ensuring continuity of care for our clients and their pets. This also allows our vets and nurses to develop essential skills in managing emergency cases from start to finish. Support and advice are readily available from our team whenever needed.

The Role

As a night Veterinary Nurse, your responsibilities are crucial in providing overnight care and support for animals in need. Your primary duty is to monitor and assess the condition of hospitalised patients, ensuring their well-being throughout the night. This includes administering medications, monitoring vital signs, and providing any necessary treatments or interventions as directed by the veterinarian. You will also be responsible for assisting with emergency cases that may arise during the night, providing immediate medical attention and stabilising patients. Additionally, you will be responsible for maintaining accurate medical records and ensuring a clean and organised environment in the veterinary clinic. Your role as a night Veterinary Nurse plays a vital part in ensuring the continuous care and comfort of animals outside regular working hours.

Successful Candidate

A successful candidate should possess a combination of technical skills, experience, and personal qualities. Firstly, they should have a strong background in veterinary nursing, with a relevant qualification and practical experience in a veterinary setting. This includes knowledge of animal care, medical procedures, and emergency protocols. Additionally, the candidate should have excellent communication skills to effectively interact with the veterinary team. They should be able to remain calm and composed in high-pressure situations, as emergencies can occur during the night shift. Attention to detail is crucial, as they will be responsible for accurately administering medications and monitoring patients' vital signs. Flexibility and adaptability are also important, as night shifts may require working irregular hours and being able to handle unexpected situations. Ultimately, a successful candidate for a night Veterinary Nurse position is someone who is dedicated, compassionate, and committed to providing exceptional care to animals in need, even during the overnight hours.
