Bootle/Cheltenham/London with flexible working options

The challenge

The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is a public corporation, responsible for the regulation of the nuclear industry in the United Kingdom. Our mission is to protect society by securing safe nuclear operations. As an ONR Inspector, you'll be part of a unique organisation, using your knowledge to regulate the nuclear industry. It's varied and vital work, as the rewards reflect.

The role

We are the UK's independent nuclear regulator with the legal authority to regulate nuclear safety, civil nuclear security, safeguards, conventional health and safety and transport. ONR deals with the entire nuclear lifecycle, which means it's an organisation like no other. We regulate everything from the latest technologies to the decommissioning of nuclear facilities.

The work of an ONR inspector can range from enforcing the law and investigating incidents, to on-site inspections and assessing submissions made by the duty holder, depending on specialism. In all cases, Inspectors must blend technical talents with proven people skills: communicating with a range of stakeholders, explaining the basis of our decisions and taking formal enforcement action as required.

As a Nuclear Inspector, you'll have the chance to create a better, safer nuclear industry in a fascinating role. It involves assessing duty holders' safety cases to ensure that nuclear facilities are designed, run and decommissioned in line with legislation. You may also work with government, professional bodies and institutions to develop legislation and good practice, both nationally and internationally. Our Inspectors are often required to represent ONR and the UK at international forums.

The person

We will provide training and on-the-job development in the required regulatory and legal aspects of the role, showing you how to apply your technical expertise in a regulatory context. You should have a relevant degree (or equivalent), chartered membership of a professional institution (or equivalent professional experience) and ideally experience in the nuclear industry or a high hazard industry. We will also consider any other suitable experience relevant to our regulatory purposes.

Equally important are sound judgment and effective communication skills. We're looking for people who can influence at the highest levels in both duty holder and stakeholder organisations, while collaborating and working as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. If you've got what it takes, there are some great opportunities ahead: the opportunity to develop regulatory skills, whilst applying your technical knowledge to support delivery of our mission.

The rewards

We offer competitive salaries at the ONR, with this role attracting a salary of GBP55,019 - GBP93,606 plus an additional GBP4,052 London Weighting Allowance if applicable. Furthermore, you'll be eligible for a substantial Civil Service Pension scheme with excellent levels of employer contributions (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits), and generous holiday entitlement. ONR operates a hybrid working arrangement.

About us

ONR is a Public Corporation with a mission to protect society by securing safe nuclear operations. Our staff are drawn from a wide range of professional backgrounds with specialist inspectors to deliver our core business including civil engineering, radiological protection, protective security, human factors, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, cyber security and nuclear physics. And together they're involved in everything from assessing safety cases, inspecting nuclear sites, communicating our decisions, training new recruits and representing the UK and ONR within the wider international nuclear community.
