Lucas, Apprentice

What is the Nuclear Engineering Degree Apprenticeship Programme:

We’re recruiting for apprentices to join our Nuclear Engineering Degree training programme working as part of some of the most exciting projects at EDF.

During your apprenticeship you’ll be looking to make an impact – using your skills, knowledge and passion to achieve great things. So how about taking on the challenge of beating climate change?

During this four-year Degree Apprenticeship, you’ll learn from our industry-leading experts and gain valuable experience, whilst studying for a Bachelors’ Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. You can expect on-the-job training and the kind of practical experience you simply can't get on campus. On the scheme you'll follow the Level 6 Nuclear Scientist Nuclear Engineer Apprentice Standard.

Once you have settled in, you can expect to work in different areas of work such as design and engineering, core engineering, technical specification, commissioning and pre-operations and operations and engineering processes.

What salary and benefits are we offering you?

  • Starting salary of £21,819 plus excellent benefits
  • Accommodation and meal costs covered in your first year if you do not live locally to Bridgwater
  • 28 days’ annual leave
  • Flexible benefits package

Training, development and support for you:

You’ll spend your first year in full time residential study at the National College for Nuclear, completing a foundation year in engineering, including both academic and hands on learning within a realistic training environment. You’ll undertake foundation training courses and complete orientations at your EDF location.

In years two and three, your time will be split between your studies and on the job learning at your EDF location, whilst you start to specialise in your chosen field.

In your final year, you’ll spend most of your time at your EDF location, whilst continuing your studies through distance learning. You’ll have developed your knowledge and skills from your studies and in the workplace and you will have captured the learning evidence as part of your training and development portfolio.

You’ll enjoy plenty of opportunities to get involved in meaningful and challenging work but that doesn’t mean you’ll have too much on your plate. You’ll be on block release from work when you’re studying, and we’ll offer support to help you manage your workload.

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will gain a BSc degree in an Engineering discipline and have experience of working in various areas of EDF understanding the foundation engineering principles and how they apply in major engineering projects.

At the end of your apprenticeship, you could move into engineering roles within a variety of teams cross the business.
