The Opportunity…
We are looking for a Nuclear Fuel Design Engineer to join our Fuel and Core Branch (F&CB) as part of the Nuclear Services Business.
The F&CB supports Hinkley Point C, Sizewell C, Sizewell B, and both operating and defueling Advanced Gas Reactors (AGRs). This involves providing safety substantiation and technical advice in the following areas:
- Design and manufacture of fuel, fuel components, and core components
- Assessment of the properties of different materials, individual components and entire fuel assembly structures in-reactor and during ex-reactor handling, storage and related processes.
As a member of the Nuclear Fuel Group, you will report to the Nuclear Fuel Group Leader and work closely with other Nuclear Services groups, EDF Licensee Groups, Power Stations and Fuel Suppliers on the aspects listed above.

We can offer a competitive salary from £40,069
- £71,779, and you’ll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Nuclear Generation Company Agreement as well as your existing salary, competence, experience, and qualifications.

What you’ll be doing…
You will work as part of a team to:
- Assess changes to Fuel Designs and manufacturing to ensure fuel components perform as desired in-reactor and during post irradiation handling. This can involve data at atomic level, right through to consideration of entire fuel assemblies.
- Interact with power station personnel to advise on and resolve issues involving irradiation, handling or storage of fuel, fuel components and core components.
- Write and verify safety cases to demonstrate the safety of the fuel, fuel components and core components.
- Review technical reports and engineering drawings submitted by suppliers for their acceptability to specification, quality and adequacy.
- Carry out calculations and also provide judgements to support all of the above.
- Interact with key stakeholders including the Fuel Vendors, Fuel Contract Managers, Office for Nuclear Regulation, the station Nuclear Safety Groups and Fuel Route Groups, and other senior company stakeholders.
- Keep up to date with industry research and operational experience in the Fuel Design discipline.
- Drive your own training and development, within our structured training arrangements.
- Attend, chair and/or act as secretary for various technical meetings and working groups.
The focus will be water reactors, with some AGR work likely.
Who you are…
Your background should include the following:
- Qualification or relevant experience in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Applied Physics, or a complementary technical discipline.
- A passion for understanding the detailed behaviour of high integrity engineered components operating in adverse environments.
This opportunity would suit also suit a graduate (or someone with equivalent academic qualifications and experience) as an established and systematic training programme will be provided. However, experience in one or more of the following would be an advantage:
- Experience of practical mechanical and materials design issues.
- Interaction with suppliers of high integrity engineered components to ensure their design and manufacture meets requirements.
- Experience in presenting complex technical information to senior stakeholders, customers or regulators.
