About the opportunity:

We are currently recruiting for a Nuclear MaterialsSenior Consultant to join our team. You will ideally be based at our based in our Warrington, Cumbria, or Harwell offices, and will focus on providing technical and material science capabilities to support our clients in a variety of challenges associated with the immobilisation, storage and disposal of radioactive wastes, Nuclear Materials and High Heat Generating Waste (HHGW). In addition, you will also provide, as required, support to other projects in the areas of decommissioning and radioactive waste management. The post offers the opportunity to apply your skills to solving real world problems in the nuclear industry in a customer-focused environment. The vacancy provides an excellent opportunity for those wishing to further progress their careers in our technically challenging and commercially focussed business.
You will work on a range of desk-based consultancy projects for customers including owners of radioactive wastes and Nuclear Materials, both in the UK and overseas. Our established client portfolio includes the NDA, NWS and Sellafield Ltd.
The work includes a variety of desk-based activities across the areas of Nuclear Materials, actinides, HHGW and, more broadly, integrated radioactive waste management, including:
  • Deploying desk-based and analytical capabilities to assess, rationalise and document solutions for a variety of engineering, chemical, physical, and/or materials science problems. These problems will be in the field of Nuclear Materials, actinide and HHGW management & disposal. Work will include the definition, design, procurement & leading of R&D programmes and the subsequent data analysis & interpretation.
  • Supporting radioactive waste management organisations to assess disposability cases and/or supporting the development of requirements, disposal concepts, specifications and safety cases, with a focus on challenges related to physical, chemical, and/or material science of Nuclear Materials.
  • Leading the production of high-quality technical reports, either as main author or coordinating other technical resources.
  • Reviewing and assimilating data/information and technical reports produced by other members of the team.
  • Leading successful interactions with customers, including presentation of key results and their interpretation in the context of client needs.
  • Leading business development activities (including competitive bidding) in relevant technical areas.
  • Undertaking project management and project control activities and/or overseeing larger projects with dedicated professional project management support.
  • Taking ownership of agreed work areas, and delivering work to agreed timescales, quality and cost.
  • Mentoring and supporting junior staff development.

Here's What You'll Need:
We are keen to interview any outstanding candidates with relevant skills and experience, even if they do not fit the exact description below.
  • A degree in a relevant physical science or engineering discipline OR equivalent training/experience.
  • Hold (or actively pursuing) relevant chartership.
  • Relevant professional experience demonstrating technical/engineering skills for a variety of technical challenges across different material, chemical, physical science and/or engineering problems.
  • Outstanding desk-based analytical skills with focus on engineering, materials science, chemistry, or physics, ideally in the field of Nuclear Materials and actinide or HHGW management & disposal.
  • Strong and demonstrated track record of professional experience in deploying technical/engineering skills for a variety of technical challenges across different material, chemical, physical science and/or engineering problems.
  • Numerate with excellent technical writing skills, demonstrated by publication of technical work in industry reports and/or scientific literature.
  • Flexible, innovative, and keen to own and develop the client portfolio, including demonstration of significant commercial skills.
  • Adaptable, able to work on a number of varied projects at the same time, prioritising as appropriate.
  • Able to work within multi-disciplinary teams and lead where necessary.
The following are not essential, but we welcome applications from candidates who have:
  • Experience of desk-based studies on Nuclear Materials would be highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience or understanding of Nuclear Materials, actinide or HHGW management & disposal would be desirable.
  • An understanding of UK (NDA and NWS) disposal programs would be beneficial.
  • Knowledge of the wider nuclear industry, either UK or international, would be beneficial.
