We perform a varied, challenging and crucial role every day.
As a Nuclear Safety Inspector, so will you.
The challenge
Often in the public eye, the Office for Nuclear Regulation’s (ONR) mission is to protect society by securing safe nuclear operations. We’re responsible for shaping and delivering the regulation of Nuclear Safety, security and safeguards across Great Britain. Our Inspectors are on the frontline with dutyholders, using their skills to satisfy our mission. It’s a role that comes with responsibility, but also great variety and the chance to develop professionally.
The role
As part of our Nuclear Safety Inspector team, you’ll take on a unique challenge, applying the law while supporting the UK’s sustainability objectives. Our Inspectors sample compliance, promote improvements to safety standards and reassure the public. Tasks include the assessment of safety submissions and compliance inspections on site. In all cases, Inspectors must work with numerous stakeholders, giving advice, explaining decisions and supporting formal enforcement action if necessary.
Nuclear sites include a wide range of structures providing key functions. These functions include containment, radiological shielding, fire protection, and, in some cases, physical security. As a Civil Engineering-focused Nuclear Safety Inspector, your main task will be to evaluate new and existing structures to decide if they reach our standards You will need to draw on your knowledge of how structures are built to withstand natural and man-made hazards, how they age and degrade and, in time, you’ll experience the full asset lifecycle.
The person
At this level, you’ll need a relevant degree (for example, M.Eng in Structural Engineering) and membership of a professional body, such as the Institution of Structural Engineers. While experience in the nuclear industry is not essential, you should have worked in a high hazard industry. Whatever your background, you’ll have strong technical skills, plus the credibility to inspire trust and influence. Collaborative and organised, you apply sound judgement, make informed decisions, build relationships and communicate clearly.
The rewards
We offer competitive salaries at the ONR, with this role attracting a salary of £77,942 – £93,606 (plus £4,052 London Weighting Allowance if applicable). Furthermore, you’ll be eligible for a substantial Civil Service Pension scheme (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits). Plus, you’ll receive a generous holiday entitlement.
