Job description

Role: Oil, Gas & Marine Inspection Engineer& UAV Pilot (Hybrid)

Location Ratho, Edinburgh, UK / Hybrid

Department: Operations – Oil, Gas & Marine

Reporting to: Lead Engineer

Salary: £25,000 - £30,000 - based on previous engineering and UAV experience + plus field allowances

Contract: Full time, Permanent

About the role:


This is a hybrid role which will involve analysing data/compiling technical reports as an Inspection Engineerand data collection as a UAS pilot .


Practical fieldwork and data collection will include: aerial surveys, inspections, mapping and emissions monitoring in diverse environments such as onshore industrial/utilities facilities, offshore installations and confined spaces. The role will come with significant travel requirements and potential long periods away from home.


Your day-to-day activities will include, but not limited to:


Inspection Engineer:


Report to the Technical Manager / Team Lead(s) with the delivery of all aspects of the oil, gas, marine and other engineering business within the Company, not limited to:


  • Preparation and co-ordination of field work
  • Data management
  • Delivery of completed work-scopes
  • Complete inspection reports using Microsoft PowerPoint and/or Cyberhawk’s cloud-based, visual asset management solution, iHawk
  • Operate a payload control system on the UAS and capturing high-quality data
  • Ensure all inspection data collected is of the highest quality, accurate, concise and correctly referenced for presentation & reporting purposes
  • Assess and edit images or video footage for structural defects, damage or hazards
  • Deliver presentations of inspection results when required, onsite or through video calls
  • Provide valuable insights to clients or stakeholders
  • Write technical reports in accordance with client guidelines of Anomaly Acceptance Criteria or equivalent
  • Work effectively with drone pilots
  • Demonstrate risk awareness and significance of safety-critical management systems
  • Any other reasonable duty as requested


UAS Pilot:


  • Pilot a range of UASs (unmanned aerial systems) and associated payloads safely whilst following company procedures
  • Plan and execute drone operations in diverse environments. This includes understanding project requirements, assessing feasibility, selecting appropriate drones and sensors and coordinating the deployment process
  • Establish and enforce safety protocols to mitigate risks associated with flying drones, including conducting pre-flight checks, monitoring environmental conditions and maintaining safe distances from people and structures
  • Demonstrate risk awareness and significance of safety-critical management systems.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest regulations and ensuring that drone operations comply with all necessary legal requirements, obtaining necessary permits and licenses as required.


Key skills and Competencies include:


  • Relevant industry experience (2-3 years) or Engineering Degree
  • Experience in piloting drones in an offshore or industrial environment (preferred DJI M300, Elios2, Falcon 8 and DJI Mavic)
  • Excellent attention to detail with pride in report writing
  • Excellent communication skill: with team, operations and clients
  • Project management experience/good organisational skills
  • Able to work in safety-critical environment while under pressure
  • Risk-aware, able to describe risks and hazards on the job
  • Able to work independently with good timekeeping practice
  • Able to highlight and describe defects and hazards
  • Good understanding of risk assessment and the significance of risk management
  • Good data management
  • Good hand to eye co-ordination
  • Skilled in the use of computers, including Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge in photography: f-stop, ISO, shutter speed etc.
  • Knowledge in basic photo editing
  • Whilst training will be given in the role, some experience and knowledge of the O&G industry could be beneficial
  • Understands materials damage mechanisms, not limited to coating degradation, corrosion and cracking of materials
  • Must be willing to travel worldwide and work away from home
  • Comfortable with working in confined spaces, working at height, flying (helicopter/fixed wing) and working from a vessel/boat.
  • Eligibility to live and work in the UK
  • Fluent written and spoken English
  • Full and clean driving license
  • Pro-active with a ‘can-do’ attitude and willing to learn. Keen interest in technology.
  • Skilled in the use of computers, as well as Microsoft Office.
  • Photo editing skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills, the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to solve problems effectively and in a timely manner out on site.
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and individually.


Desired:


  • Offshore certs (BOSIET etc), Medical.
  • Visual inspection and other NDT qualification(s)/Inspection certs – ASME L1, CSWIP, API.

  • This position has a 50% travel expectation to ensure compliance stability.
