Job description

The North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub (NEY GLH) comprises of a partnership arrangement between several organisations (Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, Sheffield Childrens Hospital FT, Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals FT and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals FT). The GLH operates as a network to deliver genomic testing, as outlined in the National Genomic Test Directory, across a broad range of Genomic specialties including both cancer and rare diseases. We provide a coordinated and comprehensive service to deliver standardised outcomes, ongoing consolidation, quality improvement, and adoption of new technologies. SDGS will receive a variety of samples for genomic testing. These will be receipted into the laboratory and re-routed for preparation and testing in other laboratories within the GLH network. Archived samples will be managed locally and sent to other laboratories for testing as required. SDGS will receive patient information, data, digital images and test results from our partner NEY GLH sites and the SDGS team will process, analyse, interpret and report a range of genomic tests. SDGS will maintain administrative processes, informatics systems, quality management and appropriate laboratory accreditation to deliver their defined scope of services. Responsibilities for this role Leadership Provide advice to the Head of Laboratory and NEY GLH on policies and processes within laboratory services, including sample management, logistics, quality and analytical activity delivered by the technical team. Represent the Sheffield SDGS laboratory within the laboratory management team, within Sheffield Childrens Care Group and within NEY GLH on operational matters. Under the direction of the Head of laboratory and working with the quality lead, ensure that laboratory works to appropriate accredited standards. Be responsible for ensuring the laboratory services team delivers to appropriate policies and procedures including audit and monitoring of these. To provide a proportion of training, support, cover and documentation within the department and externally, to support Teaching, Research and Service Development. Operational Management Provide liaison with scientific teams, both locally and within NEY GLH, to ensure service wide continuity of samples being transferred, tested, analysed and reported in cross site sample management pathways. Develop and deliver regular performance reports to Head of Laboratory, Care group management and NEY GLH teams providing accurate and timely information in both written and verbal formats. These responsibilities require attention to detail and requirement to concentrate to deliver accuracy of information. This can be required in a time sensitive way requiring an ability for flexibility and change of focus. Working with the admin, IT quality and technical teams to plan and allocate workloads to deliver the required activities within a timely manner in order to enable SDGS and the NEY GLH to deliver services within the nationally designated TATs appropriate. Under the direction of the Head of Laboratory, be responsible for a delegated budget for the laboratory and work with the Care Group finance lead to deliver a balanced position. To be an authorised signatory for supplies and equipment. Line Management Responsible for leadership and management of the admin, IT, quality and technical team leads. This will include recruitment and selection, sickness absence, grievance, disciplinary, appraisal and managing poor performance as required. Support the Head of Laboratory to monitor key workforce indicators (sickness absence, turnover etc.) that affect productivity and support line managers to work with the Human Resources (HR) team to address issues of concern. Promote and develop a high performance team culture to deliver outstanding care. To provide advice and guidance for colleagues who line-manage people within the Department and to become directly involved as and when required. This includes proactively leading in times of distress for both colleagues and patients. Clinical Service Delivery Under the professional supervision of the local Deputies for Oncology and Rare Disease, to supervise, manage and take responsibility for specific service areas provided by the laboratory, including liaison with clinicians and reporting. Undertake a role in analysis and reporting of a range of genomic techniques requiring specialist technical and theoretical knowledge of genomic testing. Lead the team of genetic technologists who provide analysis and reporting of genomic test results to the scientific teams and, where appropriate to the required level of test and interpretation complexity, also be responsible for the authorising of genomic reports.
