GLAUCOMA FELLOW

DEPARTMENT OF OPHTHALMOLOGY

Salary £40,995 to £54,235 per annum plus banding supplement (1B, 40%)

Fixed Term 1st August 2024 for 1 year

We are looking for a Clinical Fellow to compliment the Glaucoma team of the Ophthalmology Department based at the National Treatment Centre - Highland (NTC-H) in Inverness.  The post is for 1 year.

The successful candidate will join a team of 2 Glaucoma Consultants and 4 Glaucoma-trained hospital Optometrists.  In addition, the Ophthalmology Department comprises 9 other Consultants, 3 Specialty Doctors, 3 Specialty Registrars/Trainees, one other Clinical Fellow and 6 Orthoptists.  Currently subspecialty interests provided by the department in addition to glaucoma include medical retina, vitreo-retina, oculoplastics, paediatrics, uveitis, cornea/anterior segment.

The glaucoma unit provides modern, evidence-based, dynamic glaucoma management to the population of the Highlands.  Our unique geography requires innovative development in virtual clinics and telemedicine to meet the clinical need and standardised best quality of care.  The unit has three Heidelberg Spectralis OCT scanners, a Kowa and Eidon fundus camera, Topcon specular microscope, Zeiss Humphrey VF analysers, Reichert ORA and iCare tonometers, Quantel retinal laser, direct SLT laser (Belkin Eagle), YAG laser and micropulse and cyclodiode laser.  Outpatient glaucoma care is via either traditional consultant-led clinics, optometrist-led shared care clinics or virtual clinics dependent on patient risk stratification.  We have 2.6 dedicated eye theatres with one of these being a subspecialty/laser theatre.  NTC-H has inpatient beds for ophthalmology patients, and out-of-hours facilities.

The Ophthalmology Department in Inverness also provides an Ophthalmology service in Orkney, the Western Isles, Wick and Fort William and it may be possible to take part in these visits.  The appointee will participate in the 1:7 on-call rota (0800 to 2000 hours) on weekends with participation in the weekday rota currently under review).  The post also offers the opportunity for both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research.

Inverness is the capital of the Highlands and enjoys a lifestyle and environment only dreamt of in other parts of the country, offering a range of leisure and sporting opportunities, good quality affordable housing and excellent schools.Raigmore Hospital is located a short walk from the NTC-H and is a modern well-equipped district general hospital with approximately 454 beds. This provides medical care and expertise, and also provides radiology, microbiology, pathology and paediatric operating and inpatient services to the NTC-H.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay.  This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff.  This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours.  However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Recruiting Board.
