Job description

Role Outline Boston University Study Abroad London is seeking a lecturer to co-teach a course on British Media in the Digital Age on the Summer 2024 Graduate Mass Communication programme for American study abroad students. The course is delivered in ten sessions across six weeks, starting on Friday 25th May. The remaining nine sessions are held on Mondays and Tuesdays (9am-1pm) amounting to 40 classroom contact hours in total, plus coverage for the final assessment for the course, which concludes on Tuesday 25th June. The successful candidate will need to be available for the full set of contact hours and will work closely with a BU London faculty colleague as part of the course teaching team. See https://www.bu.edu/abroad/programs/london-graduate-mass-communication-program/ for further details on the BU Study Abroad London Graduate Mass Communication programme. British Media in the Digital Age: There are two critical and evolutionary outcomes from this course. 1) The opportunity for anyone to be part of media. The landscape proliferated. The idea of the influencer became accessible for anyone with a PoV. 2) The ability to interact, to create a dialogue, to co-create between author and reader. This means digital media is live and should be lived. To learn about it, and to understand it in a ‘foreign country’, you need to live it. Therefore, this class will be: 1. Live: The real world will present unforeseen challenges. 2. Co-created: there will be constant inspiration, questions and discussion. 3. IRL: we will get out of the classroom to look at the media landscape differently. 4. And you in charge: You will have to participate to make it work. Classes will take place around London. From walking tours to graffiti, we will be using London to understand how it both fuels and is driven by media. Course topics include: Welcome to London; Media and the shaping of society; The rules of the road in the UK; New Media; Communities and the role of the media; Crisis Management; working in ‘it’. Required Skills The successful candidate will be an experienced practitioner with a well-established professional background in Mass Communication, ideally including international experience. They will hold a minimum of a Master’s degree in a Mass Communication related field. Experience teaching graduate students is preferred, ideally including American and international students. Applicants should also demonstrate excellent cross-cultural communication skills. To apply, please send your CV with a covering letter to recruitment@bu-london.co.uk via the 'Apply' button above. Your letter must explain concisely your suitability for the role in terms of your professional expertise and teaching experience. Review of applications will begin immediately, with a closing date of Wednesday 10th April. Initial interviews are expected to be held the week commencing 15th April. Candidates must have the unrestricted right to work in the UK. Boston University is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer, committed to increasing the diversity of our faculty. Members of under-represented groups are encouraged to apply. Job Location South Kensington, London, UK. Salary: A competitive fee is paid per course taught
