Job description

Pastoral Manager, Full-time, 37.5 hours per week

About the Role

The Pastoral Manager’s role is to lead on pastoral care and wellbeing, including the line management of Mental Health Champions and any Learning Support Assistants who deliver pastoral care and wellbeing. The successful candidate will ensure the development of a safe learner environment including being a DSL and delivering on safeguarding policies and procedures.

You will ensure effective communication with parents, where appropriate, and create and maintain positive relationships which support the best interests of the young person, always encouraging and supporting vulnerable learners by raising their self-esteem, aspirations and outcomes. You will support the induction of learners and ensure that they are aware of the pastoral care and wellbeing support available.

You will deliver the Level 2 Health and Wellbeing course and work with the team of Pastoral Managers to create resources for the course and book external speakers where appropriate.

You will be responsible for the creation of displays in the centre on mental health and wellbeing, and the promotion of other events and activities in line with the Equality and Diversity Calendar.

You will support college attendance, retention and achievement strategies through the provision of wellbeing support to individual students and groups, working collaboratively with Course Leaders and Pathway Managers to monitor the attendance of all learners, including managing interventions of those deemed to be ‘At Risk’. You will deliver triage sessions to support new mental health and wellbeing cases and conduct assessments in order to prioritise learners by need. You’ll be the designated teacher for ‘looked after’ children and those transitioning to independent living, and lead on the Personal Education Plan in collaboration with the social worker.

You will be responsible for managing engagement with student counselling services, however, please note that counselling itself is not a requirement of this role and you will be able to maintain appropriate boundaries with learners, signposting them to the relevant support to meet their needs.

The experience & knowledge you will bring to the role:

You will have thorough FE knowledge: funding frameworks, curriculum and sector developments, and government policies and priorities. You will be experienced in managing staff and ‘At Risk’ learners and you will have in-depth knowledge of Safeguarding and Prevent statutory regulations. Excellent IT skills in the use of Microsoft Office or Google Suite is a must.

Your qualifications:

A degree or equivalent in a relevant subject is essential and a professional qualification in mental health is desirable.
