As an integral and highly valued member of the Autism Assessment Pathway team, the Pathway Navigator will provide formalised peer support and practical assistance to parent/carers in order for them to access timely support and understand the pathway processes. This post holder will be someone with lived experience of a child/ young person with autism. Through sharing wisdom from their own experiences the Pathway Navigator will have a unique position to support families whilst they are part of the Autism Assessment Pathway.
The Autism Pathway involves a two stage assessment process for school aged children and young people (aged 4 – 16) September of reception year up to 16th birthday who are being assessed for Autism. The pathway begins when an initial assessment is completed when family/carers and the young person have been offered the opportunity to discuss the referral and the ongoing plan.
The Pathway Navigator will support the team within LSCFT and the ICB to ensure families are kept informed of their options and supported to make informed choices in how they and their child/young person are supported.
The Pathway Navigator will take a lead role in advocating for the child, young person and family carers within the service and wider Multi-Disciplinary team. To be a contact for families (via the established duty process) with a child or young person on the Autism Pathway.
They will also support the understanding of the Autism screening/assessment process with external agencies, partner organisations and referrers. They will work closely with the ICB Senior Pathway Navigator to ensure consistency, sharing of best practice and information sharing. This will also include working with other Pathway Navigators and Administrators in the other ICB areas.
The Pathway Navigator will support children/ young people and family carers understanding of the Autism Pathway through the provision of information and advice and enhance connection to local communities.
They will participate and contribute to service development and generate ideas for service improvements.
Lancashire &South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust provides a range of services including secondary mental health care across this area. Specialist provision comprises inpatient child and adolescent mental health services, perinatal mental health and forensic services including low and medium secure care.
The Trust also provides a range of physical health and well-being services in the community alongside a range of partners in the Lancashire, Cumbria and Sefton area.
