Salary: £23,700 with progression to £25,138 per annum

The Role


Are you an experienced, motivated and proactive payroll expert?


The payroll team plays a vital function within Newcastle University and we are on the lookout for new talent to bring into the team. 


You will be joining an established and busy team that run the University’s monthly payroll, ensuring it is processed in an accurate and timely manner. You will be responsible in supporting the efficient operations of the payroll team.

 

The position is an open-ended contract which offers an exciting opportunity to gain an insight to the operations of the finance hub.

Key Accountabilities  
•    Process new starters and leavers on the payroll system, including issuing of P45’s
•    Update personal details, including changes in tax codes, union deductions, home address etc
•    Validate overtime claim forms and process payments at the appropriate premium rates
•    Check expenses claim forms are completed in accordance with the University travel and expenses policy
•    Input expenses, fees, monthly hours payments, overtime, and other payment/deductions in line with payroll deadlines
•    Input sickness and other absences, and complete statutory sick pay forms
•    Assist with the reconciliation of gross payments in the monthly payroll
•    Respond to payroll related enquiries from colleagues, government departments and People Services colleagues

 

The Person   
Knowledge, Skills and Experience   

•    An up to date and comprehensive knowledge of statutory regulations regarding PAYE and Statutory payments, including a good understanding of legislation regarding Pensions Auto-enrolment and requirements for RTI reporting
•    A good understanding of computerised payroll systems
•    Good interpersonal and organisational skills in order to advise non-finance staff of the possible implications of non-compliance with University regulations and procedures
•    Strong oral and written communication skills in order to effectively communicate both financial and non financial information to a wide variety of individuals 
•    Ability to interpret rules and regulations in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the various University conditions of service and regulations as required to ensure accurate processing of payrolls
•    Ability to work quickly and accurately to strict deadlines
•    Excellent IT skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft Excel
•    Demonstrate discretion when dealing with confidential information  
•    Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy

Qualifications 
 
•    Educated to a minimum of 5 GCSE grade 9-4 (A-C) including Mathematics and English, or equivalent standard by experience
