Job description

UKAEA’s pay arrangements and grading structure are currently under review as part of a transformation project and proposed multi-year pay deal. UKAEA aims to introduce a new grading structure in 2024. This will enable us to lead the delivery of sustainable fusion energy and maximise the scientific and economic benefit. Now is a great time to join the Organisation and be part of the journey.

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) , including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.

Role

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference? Join our team and contribute to the future of fusion energy. As People Policy Writer, you will play a pivotal role in undertaking a review of current policies, and defining, implementing and managing a plan to update them. You will also be creating new ones and archiving obsolete ones, which will then form the UKAEA People Policy Framework to be maintained and updated moving forward.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Ensure policy changes take place in the context of the wider employment framework, for example, amendments to contracts of employment, processes, procedures and guidance documents.  To establish and follow a rolling timetable for the review and refresh of all People policies so that they meet legislative requirements, they reflect HR best practice, they are streamlined and user-friendly, and they underpin the strategic needs of the organisation.
  • At all times work in a highly collaborative fashion with colleagues in the People Department and key stakeholders, and more broadly, to review, refresh and produce new policies, so the approach is holistic, incorporating input from all People specialisms and a wide range of views.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance on complex policy matters to relevant People team members and advisors across a range of policy areas.
  • Work with the Head of Employee Relations to lead the ongoing engagement with Trade Union colleagues, including negotiations and consultations, developing excellent relationships at a local and national level, and working to achieve consensus at all times to the benefit of the organisation and its people.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements:

  • Relevant degree, CIPD Level 5 or equivalent (significant) HR knowledge and experience.
  • Demonstrable experience of leading policy change within organisations, ideally involving Trades Unions.
  • The ability to build and maintain constructive working relationships with Trades Union representatives, both local and national.
  • Effective stakeholder engagement and management.
  • The ability to influence and negotiate effectively.
  • The ability to structure and write workable policies which are clear and easily understood by all users.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to be able to explain policies, processes and/or procedures.
  • Demonstrable track record of managing competing priorities effectively, working to challenging deadlines and using sound judgement to manage situations.
  • The ability to interpret complex data from different sources easily and translate into policy and related documentation.
