JOB DESCRIPTION

The Pharmacy Informatics Specialist is responsible for supporting and participating in the selection, implementation, and maintenance of pharmacy-based technology, including both hardware and software and the development of training programs for staff. Systems include Pyxis-ES, CII Safe, PakEdge packager, DoseEdge, EM-2400 compounder and Abacus TPN formulation software, BD-Logistics Systems, Alaris Infusion Pump, Codonics Safe Labeling System, ControlCheck diversion monitoring and Bar-code Medication Administration (BarTender-Print Portal). The technology involves expensive equipment with sophisticated software systems. A significant part of the job requires maintenance and monitoring of controlled drug dispensing systems, which is a high-risk area for staff, patients and the organization. Many of the systems interface with Epic and thus have a significant clinical impact including special clinical alerts and in the prevention of medication errors. Changes to pharmacy systems directly affect and are affected by changes in Epic, so a good understanding of how these systems interface is of high importance. The Pharmacy Informatics Specialist helps design how information is entered into the systems and develops reports for retrieval and assists in the analysis of that information. The Informatics Specialists act as Administrators to most systems and assign permissions to end-users from many different medical center departments. This Specialist works independently with input from pharmacy management and a pharmacy systems analyst. He/she interacts with customers throughout the organization including management of other departments, nursing, and medical staff. Frequent contact with vendors is also necessary to coordinate the maintenance and repair of systems. Increasingly, many systems cross organizations within the health network and the Informatics specialist must work with members of partner hospital pharmacy departments and troubleshoot issues or work on projects for the partner hospitals.

EDUCATION

Associate degree or formal technical training or 3 years' equivalent experience with similar Pharmacy systems. Registration as Pharmacy Technician with the State of Vermont Board of Pharmacy as well as National Pharmacy Certification.

EXPERIENCE

3+ years' relevant experience. Computer hardware troubleshooting/repair. Database and spreadsheet skills. Understanding of computer networking.

Please note: This job includes paid on-call hours. Typically, 12 hours of on-call from 1900 to 0700 weekdays and 24 hours on-call Saturday and Sunday. On-call rotation is one week, every four weeks.
