Overview of the StudentshipThe Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies at the University of Essex is pleased to announce the availability of a fully-funded three-year doctoral studentship, (starting in April 2024) in the area of Psychosocial Studies to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies at the University of Essex. The PhD programme is located within a centre of world-leading excellence for the social sciences. Our researchers are recognised internationally for their work in the role of the unconscious mind in mental health, culture and society and 90.4% of our research impact is considered world-leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021). We also have a thriving group of PhD and Professional Doctorate students who are an essential part of our research community. What unites our approach to research is a strong commitment to interdisciplinarity, collaboration and using psychosocial and psychoanalytic studies to contribute to society and make a difference to people’s lives. Applications will be considered from candidates with an interest in psychosocial studies. All academic disciplines/backgrounds are eligible. PhD projects that address topics within psychosocial studies may include but are not limited to: trauma, memory and the unconscious; fantasies of the social, myths of the nation; race and racism; geopsychoanalysis and postcolonial theory; agency, affect, emotion; generationality, age, and childhood; sexuality, normativity, and queer theory; group and institutional dynamics; art, aesthetics, image, and creativity; collectivity, protest, and political ideology; subjectivity, intimacy, and personal life; history of psychoanalysis and Jungian analysis; critical psychosocial theory; mental health and well-being; death, mourning, melancholia; psychosocial methodology; psychosocial theories and conceptual analysis; refugee studies. Eligibility criteriaApplicants must meet the entry criteria for PhD students in the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies: https://www.essex.ac.uk/departments/psychosocial-and-psychoanalytic-studies/research-degrees. This is a full-time position only and students must be able to occasionally travel to campus for supervisions and other relevant meetings and events. This studentship is not available to those wishing to study through distant leaning. This studentship is not open to students who have already started their PhD at Essex or elsewhere.
