Job description

About Us
Thames Valley Air Ambulance is one of the UK’s leading air ambulance charities. We’re here for people in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire when they need us most, bringing hospital-level care by land and air. We exist to give everybody in our community the best chance of surviving and recovering from an emergency. Our mission is to do everything in our power to protect, save and revive lives, with the best critical care at the scene and beyond. We love what we do. Our charity is a place where people care for each other, provide support, and encourage everyone to be their best and we pride ourselves on being one of the UK’s leading air ambulance charities. As an innovative charity, we are continually developing our organisation and pushing the boundaries of patient care to deliver a unique emergency service, where and when it is most needed. We are driven to do the right thing for our patients, their families, our supporters, and community. All our staff live our values: passion, excellence, respect, and care.
Thames Valley Air Ambulance (TVAA) delivers pre-hospital critical care across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxford-shire by deploying teams comprising of Critical Care Paramedics and PHEM Doctors via both rotary and rapid response vehicle platforms. The clinical roster comprises a combination of early (0630-1730 and 0700-1900) and late (1600-0200) shifts across 365 days per year. All doctors are expected to work a pro-rata number of antisocial shifts (i.e. late weekend shifts) and a minimum of 36 clinical shifts per year. Non-clinical contractual hours are included to support education, development, and clinical governance.
Successful post holders will have proven experience of independent practice within a pre-hospital/HEMS environment, possess the Diploma in Immediate Medical Care from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and work currently in the base specialties of either Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Acute Medicine, or Intensive Care Medicine.
Post holders will initially work under the direct supervision of an established, post-FIMC TVAA colleague (or equivalent level 8 practitioner) for a short period, culminating in operational sign-off to work independently. TVAA have a well-established clinical governance review process and operate a senior on-call clinical advice line, which is always accessible. Clinicians are supported by regular case reviews and are required to demonstrate ongoing competence via maintenance of a procedural portfolio and biannual assessment at a Review Of Clinical Competencies day, which is assessed by a mixture of internal (TVAA) and external faculty.
Opportunities will exist for post-holders to utilise their individual knowledge, insight, and experience to contribute towards areas of governance, audit, research and development of clinical practices and equipment/devices.
Applicants will be shortlisted against the criteria contained within the personal specification and invited to attend a selection centre at TVAA’s Pre-Hospital Education Centre at our headquarters in Stokenchurch, Buckinghamshire. The assessments will focus on a range of physical, technical, and non-technical elements. Candidates will be scored throughout the day, with the highest scoring candidates invited to an interview at the close of the day.
The ideal candidate will need to be able to demonstrate the following:
