Job description

The University invites applications for the above post which is available immediately and tenable for 33 months from commencement, with the opportunity of ongoing permanent employment with the industrial partner.

The ideal candidate is expected to have a PhD or equivalent international qualification or commensurate level of recognition/ international profile/industrial experience in a relevant numerate discipline such as Mathematics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, etc., preferable with focus on numerical modelling of hydrodynamics systems.

This is a project in partnership between The University of Manchester, The Port of Dover and the University of Plymouth. The vision of the project is to create a state-of-the-art marine digital twin of the Port of Dover, equipped to create innovative AI-enabled solutions and assessments, enabling the Port of Dover to become a tech-enabled sustainable organisation that can extend safe navigation throughout the port.

The successful candidate will be based at the Port of Dover (Harbour House, Marine Parade, Dover CT17 9BU), and will also join the vibrant research environment of both the Management Science Group and the Decision and Cognitive Sciences Research Centre at the Alliance Manchester Business School and Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering Division with the School of Engineering at the University of Manchester.  The University of Manchester is also a partner of the Alan Turing Institute, the national institute for data science and artificial intelligence, and the successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in activities with the Institute.

The University of Plymouth, School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics are collaborating with Manchester to deliver this KTP project and will co-supervise the Associate.  The Associate will benefit from access to the Maritime Simulation Laboratory a world-leading facility for research and development in the marine field at the University of Plymouth.

The Port of Dover is the busiest international ferry port in the UK, with two million cars and 11 million passengers passing through the Port every year. Dover also processes 2.4 million trucks per year, more than all other UK ports. In total, the Port of Dover deals with £144bn of trade in goods each year, and 33% of the UK’s trade with the EU, supporting businesses across the nation.  With a cargo business handling fresh produce, containers, project cargo, general cargo, grain and Ro-Ro traffic operating from a state-of-the-art terminal next to the world’s busiest shipping lane and on the quickest sea route to Europe, Dover is building for the future.  In addition, Dover is the UK’s second busiest cruise port, welcoming more than 25 cruise lines and 200,000 guests each year. The Port also has a marina and property business primed to benefit from a new waterfront.  The Port of Dover holds ambitious net zero targets, placing it at the vanguard of decarbonisation within the UK ports industry. More information on the targets can be found here. The Port’s focus on sustainability is driving it forward, enabling the team to keep the Port of Dover at the heart of international trade and tourism, and contributing value as a key gateway, employer, business, and community partner.

Dover is in the Southeast of the country in the region of Kent and is easily commutable from Folkestone, Deal, Ramsgate and Canterbury.

Due to the nature of the funding, KTP Associates who have already completed a KTP are not eligible to apply.
