NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa, and research sites Harwell and Winfrith. NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog. As a division of NRS, Dounreay is responsible for the clean-up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development.
NRS is an exciting place to be, and this role is the perfect opportunity for you to be part of our challenging mission - to safely and successfully manage the UK’s civil nuclear legacy on behalf of the nation. To deliver our commitment, we need people like you who want to perform at an industry leading standard and be part of a team that continues to develop, innovate and even exceed our greatest achievements.
At NRS, we understand, and acknowledge the value of an inclusive working environment, and celebrate the diversity this brings to our workplace. Without this approach, we wouldn’t be in the position that we are now, being able to safeguard and secure the future of our organisation.

About the role
Hear from the Hiring Manager
“_NRS has an exciting portfolio of projects across the fleet with many decades of work on our forward plan. Every project has unique and interesting challenges requiring sound engineering judgement, teamwork and project delivery excellence. Many of our projects are world first decommissioning challenges and attract interest from the wider decommissioning community. Some examples include – the decommissioning of the world’s first high temperature helium cooled reactor using laser cutting and remote operations at Winfrith; the removal of 8 1000Te heat exchangers from the primary circuit at Dungeness and subsequent smelting; the isolation, asbestos removal & demolition of the Sizewell A turbine Hall; the removal of the graphite core at Trawsfynydd, which will be the largest ever reactor core decommissioning activity worldwide._
Oldbury is a nuclear site that finished generating electricity in 2012 and is currently in the decommissioning phase.
Oldbury was the first nuclear site to have a concrete pressure vessel. When fully operational, the site was capable (on a typical day) of producing 435MW of electricity, enough to meet the needs of a city one and a half times the size of Bristol.
Current work includes: -

  • Decommissioning work within the ponds building making it ready for care and maintenance.
  • Isolating the turbine hall electrically and mechanically to allow bulk asbestos strip and demolition.
  • Construction of new buildings to support decommissioning activities, e.g. the advanced vacuum drying system (AVDS).
  • Retrieval, packaging and conditioning of operational Intermediate Level Waste (sludges, resin and FED) and consignment to the Interim Storage Facility at Berkeley.
  • Continuation of low level waste shipments.
  • Ongoing Asset Management, Maintenance and Compliance activities.
  • Preparations for the demolition of the Oldbury Technical Centre adjacent to site.

Could you be our next Plant Engineer trained as a Senior Authorised Person? This role would suit an engineer with an interest in developing their safety knowledge, technical writing skills and radiological awareness. You'll have the opportunity to train as a Senior Authorised Person and support the Oldbury Decommissioning Programme by ensuring safety from plant-related hazards in accordance with the company’s safety rules (electrical, mechanical and radiological).
