Overview of project/role

London Underground is one of the world’s most famous metro systems and is responsible for more than 3.5 million passenger journeys a day. It has 11 lines covering 402km and serving 270 stations. During peak hours, more than 500 trains are in operation.
We have great opportunities for Plant Fitters to maintain static and mobile plant and equipment on a repair or pre-programmed basis, ensuring that all plant is serviced to manufacturer’s recommendations/Plant Services Working Instructions and may be required to work independently or as part of a team.

You will also be required to attend customer work sites to investigate and rectify faults and advise and guide customers on the safe and effective operation of hire equipment.

Key Accountabilities

• Diagnose faults on a variety of mechanical / electrical plant and equipment.
• Repair, recondition and service all types of mechanical / electrical static and mobile plant and equipment within the workshops or at outlying sites, and pass fit for purpose.
• Diagnose and service Battery Powered plant and equipment.
• Manufacture replacement parts as directed.
• Install new static plant and equipment in accordance with design specifications.
• Ensure that all hand and power tools and test equipment are used as instructed and with due regard to safety.
• Drive Company vehicles to and from outlying work sites as may be required and diagnose and repair faults to the required standards of safety, quality and reliability, and advise on the safe and effective operation of hire equipment. This may require working at remote locations without direct supervision.
• Assist other staff as required.
• Complete all paperwork and reports as required.
• Ensure that work areas and all plant and equipment are maintained in a clean, tidy and safe condition.
• Be responsible for the overall quality of the work produced.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

All of the below are essential unless stated desirable

Skills/Knowledge

• IT skill to become fully conversant with systems used within Plant Services Division, including bespoke software packages.- Desirable
• Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise their workload effectively, with capability to work to tight deadlines under pressure.- Essential
• Ability to understand and comply with LU and Plant Services Procedures.- Desirable
• The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with managers, customers and staff.

Experience

• Experience of repair and maintenance of mechanical and electrical plant and equipment. - Essential
• Some knowledge and experience of the plant hire and maintenance industry, preferably within a railway environment.- Desirable
• Strong customer focus and experience of advising customers on most appropriate products and safe use.- Essential

Additional Information.

This is a safety critical role so you will need to get clearance from our Occupational Health team before you start.

The shifts are permanent Days Mon – Friday but must be flexible to cover nights if required.

Must be able to work flexibly within Plant Services team, including night and weekend shifts and "on call" duties
