Job description

About the Team

The Transport team is a challenging but fun team within HM Treasury, responsible for managing the costs of building, maintaining and decarbonising the transport network as well as considering the role of transport in boosting economic growth to level up communities across the UK. We work collaboratively with the Department for Transport (DfT) and No.10 to meet our policy objectives.

We have a strong dedication to diversity and inclusion, welcoming those with both HM Treasury and non-Treasury experience. We are keen to encourage applications from candidates with a diverse set of backgrounds, skills and experiences and those looking to work in our new Darlington economic campus: we value fresh perspectives and new ways of looking at issues. You do not need to have experience of spending or economic policy making to join the team - just enthusiasm for making a difference and a sense of curiosity!

About the Job

You will:

  • Lead on policy and spending strategy, working collaboratively with Treasury colleagues, and across government to deliver key aims whilst maximising value for the tax payer
  • Develop and hone your knowledge of the policy area, including keeping up to date on reporting in the media
  • Play a key role in assessing and negotiating spending settlements

These are high-profile roles offering you an excellent opportunity to work across a breadth of policy and spending issues. The coming year will be an exciting one, with the opportunity to influence the Department for Transport's agenda and spending plans ahead of the next spending review.

There is scope to tailor the role to the individual, and areas of responsibility will adapt over time as policy is developed.

About You

If you are able to use evidence to support decision making and you are comfortable giving advice and building strong working relationships - we want to hear from you! You will need to be adept at prioritising a full workload, often reassessing to address short-term issues or problems while still making progress against the long term objectives.

Some of the Benefits our people love!

  • 25 days annual leave (rising to 30 after 5 years), plus 8 public holidays and the King’s birthday (unless you have a legacy arrangement as an existing Civil Servant). Additionally, we operate flexitime systems, allowing employees to take up to an additional 2 days off each month
  • Flexible working patterns (part-time, job-share, condensed hours)
  • Generous parental and adoption leave packages
  • Access to a generous Defined Benefit pension scheme with employer contributions of 27%
  • Access to a cycle-to-work salary sacrifice scheme and season ticket advances
  • A range of active staff networks, based around interests (e.g. analysts, music society, sports and social club) and diversity

For more information about the role and how to apply, please follow the apply link.

If you need any reasonable adjustments to take part in the selection process, please tell us about this in your online application form, or speak to the recruitment team at hrrecruitment@hmtreasury.gov.uk
