Seasonal Vacancy – April 2024 Port Operative - Boatyard
If you’re looking for a new challenge, read on. We’re looking for someone with a positive ‘can-do’ attitude to join our Boatyard team working in East Cowes.
The Role
In this challenging, customer facing position you’ll work as an individual and as part of a close- knit team to assist with lifting and launching all types of boats, carrying out general boatyard duties and vessel maintenance.
Duties will include:
- Promoting and delivering a safety-first culture ensuring the highest standards in Health & Safety for harbour users and colleagues.
- Proactively engage with harbour and boatyard users and stakeholders ensuring a high level of customer care and satisfaction.
- Carry out general boatyard duties and vessel maintenance as instructed by Team Leader.
- Assist other Harbour Commission teams as required.
About You
We’re looking for an enthusiastic, motivated team member with a proven ability to work in and actively promote a Health & Safety conscious environment. You’ll be comfortable with multi- tasking and balancing priorities in line with your Team Leader's instructions. You will ideally have experience in polishing and anti-fouling. A hardy tolerance for working outdoors in all weathers is essential.
Preferred Qualifications
- GCSE Maths and English to grade 4/C or above.
General Information
This is a full time, seasonal position. Given the nature of the role, some flexibility will be required during peak times including weekends, evenings, and Bank Holidays with sufficient prior notice.
The role is based at Kingston Boatyard in East Cowes and occasionally Cowes as required.

Cowes is the Islands’ major port seeing a wide variety of commercial shipping, vehicle, passenger and highspeed ferry movements. Playing a major role in the world of yacht racing and pleasure sailing, Cowes sees a huge number and wide variety of resident and visitor pleasure boats each year.
Cowes Harbour is a Trust Port, meaning we have no shareholders or other owners, but we are managed for the benefit of our users. The commission receives no funding from local or national government. Self-funded, money is raised through harbour dues and our commercial activities such as Kingston Boatyard, Shepards Marina, moorings on the River Medina, fuel barge and commercial contract work carried out by our afloat team.
