Job description

Lincolnshire County Council is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic Headley Trust FindsIntern to join its experienced and successful Historic Places Team supporting the work of the Finds Liaison Officer.

About the role

The Finds Intern will assist with the running of the Portable Antiquities Scheme in Lincolnshire as required by our agreement with the British Museum. The intern will help assist the Finds Liaison Officer and Assistant Finds Officer in the cataloguing of archaeological finds discovered by members of the public and record them onto the national finds database.

We employ a hybrid working model, combining remote work and office presence. Staff are typically expected to be in the office around two days per week.

Your will be offered training and guidance on finds identification and recording and there will be opportunities to attend British Museum training courses (which will be run remotely and are subject to availability).

About you

We invite applications from enthusiastic individuals who are keen to learn about heritage, and work as part of a team. You will need to have basic literacy skills and be comfortable meeting and speaking with people from different backgrounds.

The successful applicant will help identify, photograph and research archaeological artefacts and work with volunteers who support our vital work and help with social media and the Lincolnshire blog page. They will liaise with colleagues within Lincolnshire County Council and external partners.

You will be offered training and guidance on finds identification and recording and there will be opportunities to attend British Museum training courses.

As part of the internship, you will undertake a project, based on the intern’s skills and interests, in collaboration with Lincoln Museum to create a display of recently discovered finds found by the public, and carry out related public outreach and social media campaigns to share engaging information with the public. With guidance, the intern will identify funding and managing budgets and be supported to make the display engaging for lots of different audiences.

No formal qualifications or experience is required for this role.  If selected for an interview, you will receive the interview questions in advance, enabling you to prepare your responses thoroughly and present your best possible self during the interview.

In both archaeology and museums, an issue with lack of diversity within the workforce has been identified (see Chartered Institute for Archaeologists and Museums Association) among those with disabilities, from low-income families, and from diverse ethnic backgrounds. This round of Headley Trust Internships contributes to the PAS Equality and Diversity Group strategy by providing opportunities for people from socially or economically disadvantageous backgrounds to gain experience to enter a career in archaeology or the museum sector. Priority will therefore be given for applications from candidates from these underrepresented groups and who have no qualifications or experience in the sector (paid or voluntary).

Applications close 02/06/24 and Interviews will be held on or around 12/06/24

If you would like an informal discussion, have any questions about the role or would like to attend a taster session please contact:

Lisa Brundle via email lisa.brundle@lincolnshire.gov.uk

Just so you know, taster sessions take place on a Friday afternoon.

Please note that previous interns are not eligible to apply for the internship.

Best of luck with your application
