You have an exciting opportunity to join our groundbreaking, interdisciplinary research team to develop a new approach to measuring the public benefits derived from outdoor culture and heritage of some of England’s most fascinating landscapes.?
As part of a collaboration between the two largest landowners in England (National Trust and Forestry England) and Exeter University, you’ll benefit from unrivalled access to data, knowledge and sites, as well as opportunities for working across organisations and participating in cross-disciplinary workshops and training programmes.?

Your contractual location will be our head office in Swindon, however there will be an opportunity to explore and agree hybrid working arrangements which strike the right balance for you and the Trust. The role will involve travel to meet with stakeholders and to carry out work, including to the case study locations in the Lake District and South Downs National Parks.
What you'll be doing Reporting to the Senior National Archaeologist you'll be embedded in the forward-thinking central National Trust Historic Environment Team, but you’ll work closely with economists from the University of Exeter and project partners Forestry England.
You’ll research how we understand and value outdoor culture and heritage: coordinating workshops and stakeholder engagement, collating and analysing data, and co-designing and implementing experimental methodologies. You'll prepare written reports for publication (academic and sector-relevant).
The work will include:
· Reviewing the existing culture and heritage capital taxonomy (work already undertaken by DCMS) and specifically how it relates to outdoor culture and heritage.
· Assessing the existing evidence base underpinning that taxonomy and identifying gaps.
· Understanding the nature and limitations of existing historic and environmental data.
· Liaising with local and national partners to collate relevant heritage and environmental data and identify gaps.
· Collaboration with economics PDRA on the relationship between the taxonomy and values.
· Co-designing and conducting experimental methodologies to address some of the gaps identified.
· Developing understanding of the relationship between culture and heritage and natural capital. Who we're looking for You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. For this position we’re looking for someone who has:
· Understanding of and familiarity with landscape and outdoor heritage?
· Experience of using spatial and temporal data to analyse land use and the distribution of culture, heritage and natural assets.?
· Experience of planning and delivering stakeholder engagement e.g. workshops, meetings
· Literature review skills and the ability to synthesise evidence across a range of disciplinary perspectives including archaeology, economics, sociology, history and cultural studies.?
· An understanding of environmental data (including historic environment and cultural heritage data), where and how they are held, their structure, and limitations.? The package
