Postdoctoral Researcher On The Moist Convective Environment

Postdoctoral scientist sought to undertake research into the moist convective environment in the atmosphere. This research will form a major part of a large joint NERC / Met Office programme on turbulent processes associated with moist convection that aims to significantly improve the representation of turbulence and convection in kilometre and sub-kilometre scale weather and climate models. A major element of the programme will be the investigation of results from the successful WesCon field campaign to measure convective turbulence with storms in the southwest of the UK that took place during summer 2023.
Contract length up to 30 months.
The scientist will focus on evaluating the convective environment, specifically the inversion and stable layers as well as the influence of cloud spacing on turbulence and convective dynamics. They will join 6 other Postdoctoral Researchers based in Reading working on this programme as well as researchers based at other UK institutions and at the Met Office.
Applicants should have:
- a PhD in atmospheric science, engineering, physics or mathematics (or a closely related subject) or expect shortly to obtain this or equivalent research experience
- strong skills in the analysis of observational and/or model data and its interpretation
- the ability to formulate, develop or analyse conceptual and mathematical models, and to implement and critically assess these
- good communication skills and the disposition to collaborate effectively with both internal and external project members
- the ability to apply their skills and knowledge to analysis of the convective environment.
