Practical Assistant/Personal Aide

A Practical Assistant/Personal Aide is required by an Independent Employer in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire who is known as supportive, innovative, and bold. Her goal is to develop the careers of certain young people who spend one year supporting her, while she leads a full and happy personal and professional life without letting her disability stand in the way of this.

About you

You will be one of the bright, competent and motivated people who make up the team of PAs that makes her busy life practical.

You will be organised, practical and self-motivated, with attention to detail and the ability to plan. You may not yet have the confidence, but you have excellent interpersonal skills and you learn quickly. This role gives you the opportunity to learn important transferable skills and gives you flexibility to earn and still travel, work elsewhere or take part in other activities in your time off (at least 14 days per month, yes, you read that right: per month!). You can have this job while based or living anywhere within a few hours travel of Cambridge. Minimum commitment of four months, maximum one year.

NOTE: This role has an unusual flexible and residential work pattern and, due to its nature, Genuine Occupational Requirements under the Equality Act 2010.

The Employer

She is an educated professional in her forties. She is a civil & commercial mediator, resolving people's disputes before they get to court; and she also runs a small social enterprise which builds technology for disabled people. She has a sense of humour and a can-do approach. She lives with her partner and their energetic dog, and when they are not working, they lead a busy, happy and active home life too. She does everything that anyone else in her position does, but the difference is that she lives her life with a physical disability that means she is extremely weak.

She uses a powerchair and need to have someone alongside her at all times to help her with the simple things that her condition prevents her from doing for herself. Basically, this job is to lend her your arms and legs and use your brain to make it all look easy! It's a role which is very varied, and you can make as much of it as you wish: there's personal care, it involves helping her as she does her job, there's cooking and stuff in her home, and she will rely upon you to organise things so it is physically and practically possible to do everything she does.

The residential working pattern of this job means that you live-in day and night for one-third of each shift cycle, and then you have twice as much time off duty at home. You can be paid a regular salary for committing to this, or you can work on a zero-hours basis and choose when you work. During each shift you stay with her in her home, or accompany her wherever she goes, to be available as and when she needs help.
