Job Description: School Caretaker

Location: Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, East of England

Primary Industry: Other

Secondary Industry: Education and Training

Salary: GBP23,000 - GBP24,000 per annum, EXPERIENCE DEPENDANT

30 hours per week - Mon-Fri 8am - 2.30pm (half an hour unpaid lunch break) Term Time Only plus 15 days.

FULL CLEAN DRIVING LICENSE IS REQUIRED

It is the duty of all colleagues to report breaches of school policies or procedures to the Headteacher or other senior colleague or governor.

Job Duties:
  • To ensure the 3G sports pitch is maintained daily, using the relevant machinery to sweep the carpet and ensuring that the area is free of litter.
  • Ensure that janitorial duties are undertaken, cleaning the student and staff toilets during the day and ensuring that the Staffroom is kept clean and tidy.
  • To be responsible for the security of the premises and be a key holder for the school and attend emergency callouts if covering this duty.
  • To ensure furniture is laid out for assemblies, examinations, all other events, and cleared away after events.
  • To be responsible for the general tidiness of the school, ensuring the school is kept clean on a daily basis, litter is collected from all areas of the site, bins are emptied and graffiti is removed etc.
  • To clear up and clean spillages, sickness and other unfortunate emergency matters.
  • To adopt a hands-on approach to being a first response to premises related issues, minor repairs, maintenance, redecoration, cleaning and internal improvements to the furniture and fabric of the school where appropriate.
  • To contact the Mitie Helpdesk to report issues that fall outside of the first response remit.
  • To follow the administrative processes relating to the smooth running of the premises team.
  • To accept deliveries and undertake porterage duties, including movement of furniture and equipment within the school.
  • Monitoring and liaison with contractors who visit site as and when appropriate, reporting all information through to the Premises Manager.
  • To ensure there are adequate stocks and supplies kept for the maintenance of the school i.e. items for cloakroom replenishment etc. in accordance with the schools financial procedures manual.
  • To assist with lettings/use of school premises outside of school hours. Liaising with the Premises Manager to ensure these run smoothly. Additional payments will be made for school related lettings.
  • Drive the minibus as required ensuring minibus training is kept up to date. Ensure the minibuses are kept clean and tidy.
  • To ensure all relevant testing is carried out and records are kept accurately and up to date i.e. Fire alarm testing, water testing, emergency lighting testing etc.
  • Keep up to date with relevant role related training requirements.
  • To ensure that you do not put yourself or others at risk by ensuring Health & Safety compliance.
  • Assist the Premises Manager with all matters relating to the maintenance and hire of the facilities.
  • Provide Premises Assistant Cover as required.

To carry out such other duties as required, and as are commensurate with the grade of the post.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in caretaking or a related field.
  • Basic knowledge of maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical fitness to handle manual tasks and lift heavy objects.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
Education:
  • No specific educational requirements.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
Experience:
  • Prior experience in caretaking or a similar role is preferred.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Familiarity with health and safety regulations.
  • Working knowledge of maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Ability to operate and maintain cleaning equipment.
  • Basic understanding of heating, ventilation, and electrical systems.
  • A background in Building Trades is desirable, but relevant experience would be considered.
  • Awareness of the main requirements of health and safety legislation and good practice relevant to the duties of the post.
  • Be well organised in record keeping.
  • A full clean driving licence.
  • Have an approachable manner, being able to adapt responses according to the humour and situation of the individual.
  • Present a courteous and friendly manner to all staff, students and visitors to the school, having due regard to customer service best practice attributes.
  • Ability to relate well to students and adults. This includes using tact when dealing with difficult situations and employing suitable assertion skills in dealing with students of all ages.
  • Exhibit high moral standards in dealing with confidential and sensitive situations.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Relevant certifications in health and safety, maintenance, or caretaking.
Working Conditions:
  • Indoor and outdoor work, depending on the task.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals and dust.
  • Frequent bending, lifting, and carrying heavy objects.
  • Occasional work during evenings or weekends for special events or emergencies.
