Company Description

By 2050, the planet could be using twice as much electricity compared to today. Are you interested in contributing and helping to shape the future of the world’s energy? If so, read on.

Fusion, the process that powers the Sun and Stars, is one of the most promising options for generating the cleaner, carbon-free energy that our world badly needs.

UKAEA leads the way in realising fusion energy, partnering with industry and research for groundbreaking advancements. Our goal is to bring fusion electricity to the grid, supported by tomorrow's power stations. In pursuit of our mission, UKAEA embraces core values: Innovative, Committed, Trusted, and Collaborative.

Job Description

As an employee of UKAEA, you will benefit from:

- Outstanding defined benefit pension scheme, details of which can be found at the end of this advert.
- Corporate bonus scheme of up to 7% and a Relocation allowance (if eligible).
- Flexible working options, including family-friendly policies.
- Employee Assistance Programme and trained Mental Health First Aiders.
- Generous annual leave allowance starting with 25 days, plus 3 days of Christmas closure and 2.5 privilege days, in addition to UK bank holidays.
- Wide range of career development opportunities.
- A vibrant culture committed to equality and being fully inclusive.

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.

The salary for this role is £63,856.

The Role

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference? Join our team and contribute to the future of fusion energy. As Principal C&I Engineer, you will play a pivotal role, providing technical and project leadership on projects of large significance or scale, influencing the direction of the organisation and/or external collaborators. You will also provide specialist technical knowledge and direction in a complex field where projects often have no technical precedent and where the outcomes are uncertain.

Additional Responsibilities:

- Accountable for leading projects on major fusion systems, from concept through to detailed design on enhancement programs for UKAEA’s facilities and future fusion devices.
- Specify and lead projects involving critical plants with site-wide implications. Such projects might be international/external.
- Assume a position of technical expertise and lead in setting the direction of projects in this capacity, acting as an authority and advisor for design solutions and/or critical plant operational issues. This may include developing technical processes and/or operating procedures for the assigned area, which are formally implemented by the business in day-to-day operations.
- Lead teams to maximise engineering output while meeting all relevant health, safety, environmental and quality requirements.
- Accepting the high degree of uncertainty that comes with developing emergent technologies, creating new standards as appropriate and ensuring appropriate risk management is in a place where no formal procedures exist.
- Analysis using classic and numerical methods to support design studies. Use engineering experience to foresee opportunities for business development and contribute to related proposals and bids, which may include submitting budgets and business cases.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements:

- An honours degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or related discipline and relevant professional experience in an E, C&I engineering role. Or an HND in Electrical/Electronic discipline, or equivalent qualification level, with a greater breadth and depth of experience/knowledge.
- A strong track record of delivering complex EC&I projects to time and budget.
Good working knowledge of PLC and SCADA systems.
- Good understanding of EC&I documents (SLDs, P&IDs, C&Es, schematics etc.).
- High level of experience in the design, installation and testing of Control and Instrumentation software and hardware systems.
