Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) is the new brand of Magnox Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa, and research sites Harwell and Winfrith. NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog. As a division of NRS, Dounreay is responsible for the clean-up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development.

"The NRS Central Engineering Team are looking for an experienced External and Internal Hazards Specialist to support our Programmes and sites. You will form part of an exciting and expanding nuclear decommissioning industry within a forward-looking organisation. Providing effective hazards technical support to the business is at the heart of our future strategy, so it’s crucial that we get it right. This position will be supporting the Central Engineering Team to ensure we deliver against our mission to safely, securely and cost-effectively clean up some of the UK’s oldest nuclear sites.”

Purpose of Role

  • To provide technical knowledge and specialist support in the area of External and Internal Hazard assessments
  • Provide technical expert capability to the benefit of the business as a whole and is recognised as an industry-wide technical authority
  • Maintain and develop a comprehensive understanding across broad technical areas
  • Represent the business as a technical expert
  • Undertake Intelligent Customer and Design Authority roles in specialist areas
  • To undertake proactive advice, guidance and assurance responsibilities across the Company
  • Support delivery within their range of skills, knowledge, experience and competence
  • Contribute to the development of engineers’ technical skills and competence as a recognised authority

Key Deliverables

  • Support the Head of Profession - Civil in providing a competent internal and External Hazards capability
  • Is responsible for the technical health and development of multiple technical areas
  • As a customer-focused individual, the post holder will be expected to support delivery within their range of skills, knowledge, experience and competence
  • Proactively support the business in providing technical expertise
  • Support the effective deployment of company-wide policies, processes, systems and procedures. Define the approach for the management of safety and compliance through the definition of arrangements within the Company Quality Management System
  • Act as a customer-focused individual. Network across the Company to collaborate, leverage broader capability and the sharing of best practice
  • Develop and support Company metrics, ensuring regular production of management / trending information relating to the status and adequacy of safety, compliance and asset performance
  • Act with an outward-looking mind-set, encouraging, supporting and improving whole-fleet knowledge, through cross-industry learning / benchmarking. Communicate openly and regularly with colleagues and stakeholders to report on progress and ask for support where needed. Problem solve by taking initiative and remain positive and enthusiastic
  • Provide mentoring for engineering graduates
  • Support the Company in the development of competency. Identify training opportunities and shared learning across sites and SLCs and external parties
  • Comply with all Environment, Health, Safety, Security and Quality policies and procedures and support continuous improvement

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree (or equivalent) within a Scientific or Mathematics discipline (Essential)
  • Membership of a professional institute (CPhys/CMath) (Essential)
  • Masters level qualification National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level 7 (Desirable)
  • Demonstrable experience within the nuclear industry
  • Experience with internal and External Hazards, including wind, seismic, fire and flooding
  • Period of relevant experience and comprehensive understanding of relevant technical area including application in the management of complex systems and arrangements
  • Experience of delivery within a changing, complex and challenging environment, with a strong, collaborative communication style and ability to engage with and coach others
  • Performance and career management, including Continuing Professional Development

Please note, whilst smarter working in encouraged, you will be required to work 2 days per week from your closest site location.

  • Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) staff should refer to the document titled “Spot Point v Grade alignment” available on SharePoint for more information on how the grade structure aligns to Spot Points.
  • Flexible working – where possible.
  • The equivalent of 25 days (185 hours per year) annual leave plus Public Holidays (59.2 hours per year). This increases by 2 days (14.8 hours per year) annual leave after two full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year) , and an additional 3 days (22.2 hours per year) annual leave after five full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year). You also have the option to buy or sell the equivalent of 5 days (37 hours) annual leave each year (available in specific windows for the following holiday year). For the purpose of assessing an employee’s annual leave entitlement, a day means seven and two fifths (7.4) hours. A pro rata entitlement will apply for part time workers.

Please be aware this role holder requires security clearance, or the ability to obtain said clearance.

There is a requirement to live within a commutable distance to the sites where the role is based. For central/multi-site roles, we have various hubs across the UK and can be flexible with base location.
