Their workload continues to expand and broaden, and there is an opportunity for a Principal Consultant to manage a small team during the design and build of HS2.
Summary:
Manage and mentor a small team of Environmental Advisors and Hydrogeologists as part of a growing water services offering within this Global Engineering Consultancy, who are growing across several of their key sectors in the UK (transport, energy, nuclear, renewables and emerging power generation technologies).
The initial roles will be based within the Water Team on HS2, managing the development of water resource / groundwater on the delivery of HS2, the high-speed railway project.
Job Description
Summary:
The role will require a sound understanding of water & flood risk mitigation, hydrology, fluvial & urban hydraulics, groundwater, watershed management, geomorphology and design on major infrastructure schemes. It is particularly focussed on the Water Framework Directive & Flood Risk.

Proposed Initial Water Specialist Role Summary:
- Candidate should have experience with the following
Identifying WFD (Water Framework Directive) bodies, understanding the status of the WFD body and be able to support in the assessment of construction which could impact on the WFD waterbody
Advise on mitigation for construction
Understanding of WFD Derogation requirements
In addition to the above, the candidate would be required to support with the following
Alignment of construction phase and permanent asset works to ensure consistency in approach and tracking of narrative with key stakeholder (i.e. Environment Agency)
Management of assessment process
Supporting stakeholder engagement
Preparation meetings with client
Chairing stakeholder meetings
Interpret EA requirements
There is the opportunity for a water specialist to help develop a capacity in this area as it’s a key component required to grow their broader environmental services capability. There is, however, a number of significant projects that require managing on a full-time basis – home based, with 2-3 three days per week in the Project Office initially.
Qualifications
- A degree in a relevant environmental, geographical, science or engineering discipline is essential
- An MSc or PhD in hydrology, water quality, geomorphology or marine science is desirable
