The role
As a Principal Mechanical Engineer - Gunnery, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You'll lead Mechanical Engineering activities on several contracts, providing guidance and technical assurance to the engineers in your team, and liaising with project teams to enable delivery on the contracts. The Mechanical Engineering activities range from obsolescence changes, 3D Printing, to upgrading naval platform capability across Mission Systems contracts on equipment including 4.5" Gun, Phalanx, Gun System Automation9, T31 Gunnery, and future bid opportunities. You will be a critical part of ensuring the Royal Navy has the weaponry capability it needs.
Day to day, you'll be involved in:
  • The oversight of Mechanical Engineering activities, ensuring quality output in accordance with engineering processes
  • Developing design task proposals, requirements, and verification activities from a customer statement of need
  • Performing root cause analysis of failures to identify improvements
  • Managing tasks from concept through to implementation to defined safety standards, cost, programme and quality as an individual or as part of a team
  • Reviewing and approving documentation and drawings to deliver a high-quality output

This role is full time, 36-hours per week and will be based at Devonport Royal Dockyard with hybrid working from home arrangements.
Essential experience of the Principal Mechanical Engineer - Gunnery:
  • Mechanical Engineering Principles including materials, welding, stress analysis and manufacturing techniques.
  • Supporting Project Management by identifying risks, creating a plan and reporting updates and advising on technical aspects of the project.
  • Able to supervise, co-ordinate or work within a team providing guidance where appropriate across multiple projects and disciplines.
  • Ability to use systems engineering design processes, and preferably adapt them to suit an application.

Qualifications for the Principal Mechanical Engineer - Gunnery:
  • Chartered Engineer status or evidence of progression towards Chartered Engineer status.

The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC security clearance for this role.
