As a Principal Software Engineer, you will act as a technical lead to develop, operate, and maintain services supporting the evolving needs of one of our largest and most significant customers.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with stakeholders to determine user requirements for the services in our portfolio. Lead the incorporation of appropriate continuous feedback loops measuring customer value, usage patterns, and other actionable metrics of value.
  • Lead efforts to improve the architecture of our solutions, including security and compliance requirements and expectations. Drive design discussions across the team and document outcomes. Develop ways to test hypotheses for proposed solutions.
  • Lead by example and mentor others to produce extensible and maintainable code used across services. Identify proven practices and patterns to drive predictable results.
  • Review the code to assure it meets the team's and Microsoft’s quality standards, is reliable and accurate, and is appropriate for the scale of the solution area.
  • Maintain operations of live service as issues arise on a rotational, on-call basis. Perform incident retrospectives and share insights with the team. Hold accountability as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), mentoring engineers across solutions, working on-call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions.
  • Proactively seek new knowledge, solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of services.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C# and Python OR equivalent experience.
  • Professional software development experience building scalable, distributed services.
  • Experience as a technical lead on an engineering team.

Other Requirements:
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Additional / Preferred Qualifications:
  • High Performance Computing experience in an operational role with specific knowledge depth in large-scale distributed file systems.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Linux, or containers.
