Principal Transport PlannerService Planning

Salary: £48,000 - £65,000 (depending on skills, knowledge and experience)

Location: Hybrid working, office location Southwark, London SE1

Your expertise will keep people and the city moving

London is a world-class city that’s home to 8.6 million people and visited every year by 19 million more. Keeping it working, moving and growing is a huge challenge, but one that TfL rises to every day. Our Public Transport Service Planning team works across London Buses, DLR, London Overground, London Trams, London Underground and TfL Rail to achieve the optimal balance of journey time, capacity, reliability and value for money. We now have an opportunity in the Train Service Planning team, planning London Underground service changes.

Research and develop deliverable plans

As a Principal Transport Planner, you’ll work out how to drive continuous improvement in London Underground service specifications and meet the changing needs of both our customers and our business. You’ll achieve this through a detailed understanding of the factors which affect service levels, performance and customer demand. You’ll develop plans based on strong business case analysis, then ensure successful implementation by coordinating and integrating planning across TfL’s delivery businesses. And you’ll provide detailed planning input to TfL’s long-term investment plan. At every step, effective stakeholder management will be key to your success.

For a Transport Planner, there’s no challenge quite like TfL

You’re likely to have considerable expertise in the principles and application of transport planning. This will ideally include a detailed understanding of a range of modelling and analytical techniques as well as knowledge of business case principles. Awareness of public transport industry issues is expected, ideally focused on the London travel market. A degree-level qualification in a relevant discipline (or equivalent experience) is essential.

The qualities you need to succeed

A skilled problem-solver with the ability to think clearly under pressure, you’re capable of preparing plans to meet the needs of different stakeholders. You have excellent data analysis skills, and can interpret and explain the outputs. Highly organised, you can manage your own workload and also lead, develop and motivate others. With excellent communication skills, you can influence key decision-makers and facilitate joint decision-making.

The rewards are as impressive as your achievements

In return for your expertise, we’ll offer you an excellent benefits package including a final salary pension scheme and a generous holiday entitlement of 30 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays. You can make significant savings on travel thanks to a free Oyster Card travel pass, a 75% discount on national rail season ticket and interest-free loan, and discounted travel on the Eurostar. You can also choose to take advantage of a discounted private healthcare scheme, tax-efficient childcare payments and a host of retail, health, leisure and travel offers.

Closing date: 11 February 2024.

We aspire to be as diverse as the city we serve, and we welcome applications from all sections of the community.
