Contract type: 1 X 6 month attachment/fixed term contract (maternity cover) & 3 x continuing contracts
Location: Cardiff
NB: We are advertising for 4 positions - a 6-month attachment to cover a period of maternity leave and 3 continuing contracts. Applicants will have the option to select either the attachment/fixed term contract, the continuing contracts, or both on the application questionnaire. BBC Audio Wales & West of England
This is a new department within BBC Audio bringing together network radio production teams in Cardiff and Bristol. Staff have opportunities for collaborating, developing ideas and their careers and access to a wide range of output across science, factual, rural affairs, food, documentaries, music and drama for all BBC UK Radio networks, the World Service and BBC Sounds.
This role would be based at BBC Central Square, in the heart of the Welsh Capital. The newest BBC building with state of the art studios and outstanding environmental standards.
BBC Audio has around 670 editorial and technical staff who create and deliver more than 100 hours of original audio every day. Our podcasts and radio programmes are heard across the UK and around the world and we work with some of the biggest names in music, entertainment and journalism. We collaborate with world class partners to deliver social value. This is just a selection of the 22,500 programmes we work on every year -
Main Responsibilities
We are looking for someone with energy and ideas who can make creative and compelling radio and podcasts about science. You will have a deep knowledge of at least one aspect of science or health and will have finely tuned journalistic skills. You will be a curious person and enjoy finding and telling impactful stories - in one form or another - and understand what it takes to do it well. You will have the curiosity and tenacity to find the science stories behind the headlines and want to tell them in new and interesting ways.
You should be comfortable with editing software including Sadie and have the confidence to bounce ideas off a team and be enthusiastic about science and health.
Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience
Desirable skills include the following:
  • Knowledge of the science, health and tech media landscape both inside and outside the BBC, particularly in the podcasting and social media space
  • Science journalism: proven track record of creating high quality, evidence-based, science content
  • Research skills and experience, with an ability to quickly identify and disseminate appropriate research literature and potential expert contributors.
  • Experience of managing a team.
  • Audio recording and editing skills - including experience of creating, managing and delivering multi-track audio projects.
  • Successful candidates will be expected to work in Cardiff for a minimum of two days a week.
