The Role

We are seeking a Development Engineer to support the development of our new generation of portable, handheld diagnostic medical devices. This is a hands-on role that offers a unique opportunity to be an integral part of this new and innovative company at a very early stage. This will allow the successful candidate to be involved in many aspects of the business, significantly broadening their experience and allowing them to grow with the company.


Key Duties & Responsibilities


  • Designing and conducting experiments on optomechanical hardware to test hypotheses and writing technical reports
  • Production and assembly of test systems, jigs and fixtures
  • Assisting and carrying out design activities using CAD
  • Using prototyping to test design concepts
  • Working with the electronics and software teams to understand their impact on system-level behaviours
  • Risk management/carrying out FMEA activities with the wider team
  • Generation of design documentation including specifications, technical drawings, test and assembly procedures
  • Working with the engineering team on device verification activities


Experience, Skills & Qualifications


Essential

  • 1st or 2:1 Honours degree in engineering, physical sciences, product design, or other suitable qualification
  • A strong appreciation of statistics and experiment design
  • Data processing, analysis and presentation skills
  • Experience with software for numerical analysis and prototyping such as MATLAB, Python and Arduino
  • Working in a team to tight deadlines, applying a broad skillset to solve interdisciplinary problems
  • Appreciation of working within a highly regulated quality system, preferably medical
  • Basic knowledge of working on design/process FMEA


Desirable

  • Hands on experience working with small or delicate components
  • Appreciation of optics and optoelectronic systems, such as lasers and fibres
  • Experience of using rapid prototyping techniques
  • Appreciation and desire to work across the full product lifecycle - from concept to design to manufacture
  • Understanding of process capability and optimising manufacturing methods
  • Knowledge of design for manufacture techniques, including injection moulding, precision CNC machining and assembly processes
  • A confident user of 3D CAD tools - preferably Onshape
  • A willingness to travel to customers and suppliers where necessary
