About the Role

Nottingham Trent University seek a Professor and Academic Lead of the new Automated Distribution and Manufacturing Centre (ADMC). Due to open in summer 2024, the Centre is a £30m investment and will be a purpose-built multifunctional centre, with space allocated for research and development, new product development and testing, education and skills development, technology showcasing, networking, collaboration and event hosting. It will encompass researchers, engineers and technical specialists and be an international centre of excellence in how industry adopts automation. The investment represents a partnership between the University, established commercial organisations, National and Regional Government, and other education providers. It will follow the established UK model of Catapult Centres, providing an environment for technology innovation and impactful application.

Two teams will be established at the Centre, a core operations team and a research and innovation team. The operations team will be focused on identifying opportunities with tier one logistic and manufacturing companies as well as regional small to medium size enterprises. The research and innovation team will be led by the Professor & Academic Lead and will focus on innovation and emerging technologies. Employed by our School of Science and Technology, the Professor and Academic Lead will establish the research and innovation team in robotics and automation, supporting the adoption, integration and expansion of new automated technologies amongst regional businesses and so improve productivity and competitiveness. The team will also offer skills development to companies and support wider training which the University delivers with West Notts College.

The job of Professor is aligned to one of three career pathways: Teaching and Research; Teaching and Scholarship; or Teaching and Practice. We welcome applicants with a strong profile within the broad discipline and the ability to integrate a range of technologies and systems which could include industrial robotics, corobotic systems, autonomous mobile robots and sensor, actuator integration. Along with building the team, interfacing with senior representatives from businesses, retailers and the scientific community are key elements of the role, and the post holder will be experienced in cross-collaboration and working with senior representatives from industry.
