Overview:
Element Environmental Laboratory has an opportunity for a PROJECT SPECIALIST. Working under the guidance of the Technical Director and alongside colleagues from across all departments of the laboratory, the Project Specialist will be required to undertake the planning and execution of non-routine sample preparation in our laboratory and on occasions on client sites. This will include the ability to execute on client instructions on non-routine work and apply most appropriate techniques supported by robust methodologies to deliver fit for purpose sample preparation. The successful candidate is likely to be experienced in environmental testing having seen a wide range of sample matrices and ideally with experience of non-routine samples within an analytical laboratory preferably undertaking the preparation and analysis of soil and groundwater samples.

Element Environmental Laboratory Deeside is the largest analytical chemistry laboratory within the Element Group and the market leading UK laboratory undertaking the testing of soils, waters, wastes, oils, NAPLs, ambient air, soil vapours and gases from all over the world. The laboratory undertakes high volume routine analysis as well as offering bespoke method development, technical support, and hydrocarbon forensic interpretations to enhance the support we can deliver. The laboratory has an international reputation for service excellence and supports clients that require a higher level of technical expertise, reliability in data quality and seamless project management from sample collection to timely delivery of data in the format of choice.

Responsibilities:
  • Working in the laboratory and undertaking the preparation of soil, water, and other sample matrices to produce extracts ready for analysis
  • Undertake basic procedures/analysis using standard techniques including titrations
  • Assess equipment and reagent requirements and source appropriately
  • Prepare standards and solutions
  • Troubleshoot using knowledge and experience to move project objectives forward, identify root cause and implement viable corrective actions under direction of Technical Director
  • Assist with sample preparation method development
  • Attend clients’ sites for sample-taking and/or sample preparation as projects require
  • Carry out risk assessment as needed on all new activity given elevated risk from engaging in non-routine samples and occasional working on client sites
  • Support routine sample preparation or other departments when time permits if project work is quiet
  • Reporting of results using LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System)
  • Work to UKAS standards (ISO 17025 and MCERTS) to ensure that the agreed quality standards and requirements of our quality system e.g calibrations, AQC charts etc. are continually adhered to
  • Comply with company health and safety requirements, adopt a proactive safety attitude to ensure the safety of self and others

Skills / Qualifications:
  • 4 years plus experience working within an analytical laboratory
  • A practical mind-set and ability to propose and execute on solutions, demonstrated in work history to date
  • Ability to read and undertake published methods in order to prepare samples and extractions for analysis
