Quality Assurance Specialist

RAL Space: Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell, Oxfordshire

Salary: Band D (S1) £42,840 to £47,124 (dependent on skills and experience).

Contract Type: Open-Ended

We are looking to appoint a QA specialist to support the maintenance of our Quality Management Systems and provide QA input for the handover, commissioning and operations of new test facilities, including the National Satellite Testing Facilities (NSTF) which will increase the UK’s testing capability for space hardware. The QA specialist will be supporting senior roles and contributing to the development and implementation of working practices that meet Quality and space industry requirements.

You must be capable of thorough and conscientious work to tight deadlines across multiple projects simultaneously, adapting to changing priorities as the need arises. The work of the QA team involves liaison with multiple teams, so effective oral and written communication skills are essential when dealing with managers, engineers and scientists within STFC and with external stakeholders. There may be some need for travel on an ad-hoc basis, occasionally with overnight stays, and possession of a full UK driving license is desirable.

Role Responsibilities

  • Ensuring that quality standards (ISO9001, BS EN9100, ECSS-Q-ST-20-07C) and associated technical and safety regulations are observed.
  • Support on the preparation, update and review of Quality documentation.
  • Supporting senior QA Specialists with the administration of Facility Readiness Reviews (FRR) and witnessing of key test activities (e.g. space hardware critical moves, test gateway reviews)
  • Management of non-conformity and anomalies process, ensuring that issues are reported, documented and progressed in a timely manner.
  • Supporting internal technical investigations, performing root cause analysis and instigating corrective action
  • Producing quality metrics

Person Specification

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM subject (Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics) or equivalent experience
  • Experience of working in a technical organization (scientific or engineering)
  • Experience in a system certified to ISO9001 and/or EN9100
  • Practical knowledge of ISO 9001:2015
  • Experience of internal auditing to ISO9001 and/or EN9100
  • Experience in supporting investigation teams and tracking corrective action
